The Fulbright Hungary is inviting applications for its Postgraduate Student Scholarships.
Focus Areas
- The scholarship provides opportunities for further study or research in any field of science or art:
- Non -Degree/Certificate university education
- First year of a Master’s degree program and LL.M. program
- Research related to obtaining a Hungarian PhD or DLA degree or participation in any other research (Visiting Student Researcher – VSR). You cannot apply for a scholarship to obtain an American or other foreign PhD degree.
Funding Information
- Monthly stipend (accommodation, living expenses): $2,831 – $4,300/month (depending on university)
- Tuition subsidy: Max. $20,000 per academic year
- Travel costs between Hungary and the USA: 100% of airfare, up to $1,500
- Basic Health and Accident Insurance: Provided by US Department of State (ASPE)
- Duration:
- The maximum duration of the scholarships is one academic year (9 months), and in the case of Visiting Student Researchers (VSR) it is typically 5 months.
- The scholarship period can begin in August 2026 at the earliest and end in August 2027 at the latest.
Eligibility Criteria
- Hungarian citizenship (American-Hungarian dual citizens are not eligible to apply)
- High level of English language proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS exam)
- GRE exam (for Master’s degree applicants, except LL.M.)
- A BA/BSc degree in the applied subject must be obtained by 31 July 2025 at the latest. Applicants with a PhD degree are not eligible to apply for postgraduate student scholarships, only for research and teaching categories. If the successful applicant obtains a PhD degree before the start date of the scholarship, their eligibility for a student scholarship will cease.
- Active student status is not required and there is no upper age limit for application.
Ineligibility Criteria
- Applicants who have graduated from the United States within five years of the application deadline are not eligible to apply for a scholarship.
Evaluation Criteria
- Applications – if complete and the applicant meets the application requirements – will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- professional level,
- work plan,
- the need to reside in the United States,
- long-term success.
Application Requirements
- Confidential Letter of Reference: Three letters of recommendation in English from university lecturers or other experts in the field, workplace endorsement is an advantage;
- The Information Concerning Foreign Student Academic Records form: is completed by the applicant himself. The information provided on the form helps the American host institutions to ensure that the higher education qualification obtained by the applicant in Hungary can be integrated into the American education and assessment system;
- Transcript Release Form: only required to be completed by those who studied at an American higher education institution;
- All diplomas and their English translations, as well as all textbooks and their English translations, must be uploaded during the online application in the “ Academic Materials” menu;
- The textbooks of currently ongoing studies and their English translations must also be scanned and uploaded as above during the online application in the “ Academic Materials” menu. Certified copies of these will also be requested only from scholarship candidates in October 2025;
- Student Data Sheet: this data sheet must be completed in Hungarian and then uploaded to Country-Specific Materials in the Additional Information menu;
- Data Protection Notice and Consent Form: signed and scanned into PDF and uploaded to Supplemental Materials in the Additional Information menu;
- Application Checklist for Postgraduate Students and Visiting Student Researcher Applicants;
- For applicants in the fields of arts and architecture: A portfolio must be uploaded to the designated section of the online application;
- For Visiting Student Researcher applicants: Official letter of invitation (Sample Letter of Invitation) from the American host institution – a scanned PDF format is sufficient, to be uploaded to the online application.
