The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation has launched its Scholarships for Arts Training Abroad to support academic and technical training in the arts abroad, in the areas of visual arts, dance, theatre, music and cinema.
Funding Information
- A monthly fee of €1,500 or €50/day;
- A one-off initial amount of €1,000 for installation costs, in the case of training lasting more than 3 months;
- An amount of €500 for travel directly related to the training;
- Up to €5,000 for monthly fees, to be paid upon presentation of the respective supporting documents for payment;
- Academic training, Technical training and artistic improvement for a minimum period of 3 months and up to one maximum period of 12 months. The scholarship may be renewed for training courses that have a study plan lasting more than 12 months. The total duration of the scholarship, with renewal, may not exceed 24 months.
Eligibility Criteria
- Citizens of any nationality, resident in Portugal, may apply.
- The following applications have priority:
- Candidates at the beginning of their artistic career;
- Applications to attend academic or professional education establishments, or under the guidance of entities or artistic personalities of recognized merit;
- In the case of music, only applications in the specialties corresponding to orchestral instruments, singing and composition will be accepted.
- Applications for bachelor’s and doctoral degrees are excluded.
- Applications in the specific areas of Architecture and Urban Planning, Design, History of Art, Heritage and Archaeology will not be accepted.
- In the case of academic training, priority will be given to candidates at the beginning of their artistic career, under the age of 35, and who will complete their studies by December 31, 2025, that is, born from 1990 onwards, inclusive.
- Candidates who have already started the study cycle will also not be considered.
Selection Criteria
- Applications accepted for the competition are evaluated by the FCG with the collaboration of a panel of external evaluators, assigned to each of the areas (visual arts, dance, theater, cinema and music).
- Factors taken into consideration by evaluators:
- Academic and professional curriculum and portfolio;
- The study plan;
- The motivation for the application;
- Letters of recommendation.
- In the case of music, whenever convenient and in addition to the documentation, candidates may be called to take practical tests, which are expected to take place between the last week of May and the first fortnight of June 2025.
Application Requirements
- For admission to the competition, candidates must complete the online form, where the information to be provided to complete the registration is specified, and must also attach the following documents (PDF or JPG up to 4 MB):
- Curriculum vitae;
- Certificates of academic qualifications or other documents considered relevant to fully clarify your qualifications;
- Detailed description of the study plan;
- Letter of motivation;
- Portfolios.
- The candidate must provide, on the application form, the name and email of two people from the academy or professional from whom the FCG will request letters of recommendation.
- The candidate must add a confirmation document of acceptance to the educational establishment, at the time of registration. If you do not yet have the result at that time, you must, by June 20, 2025, attach proof of acceptance from the educational establishment or institution you intend to attend (the only document that can be attached to the application after the closing date of the competition).
