The Mongabay Latam Scholarship offers young journalists from countries that are tropical biodiversity hotspots the opportunity to report on critical environmental issues while receiving valuable training and gaining experience to advance their journalistic careers.
Benefits
- During this time, fellows will work directly with the program editor to produce six stories. Fellows will have the opportunity to collaborate with Mongabay editors specializing in different fields.
- During their internship, each fellow must commit to at least 15 hours of work per week, participate in training and practical exercises, and produce the six articles that will be published on Mongabay Latam. The work will be done remotely.
Funding Information
- Each fellow will receive $500 per month for the six-month duration of the program, or $3,000 in total.
- The sixth cycle of the Spanish-language program will take place between April 15 and October 14. For this period, Mongabay Latam will select three interns.
Eligibility Criteria
- The Mongabay Latam fellowship is open to young journalists who come from one of the 24 low-/middle-income tropical countries in Latin America.
Application Requirements
- There is no educational level requirement to participate in the program. The scholarship is not associated with any university. However, a perfect command of the Spanish language, both spoken and written, is essential.
- In the form you will have to include basic contact information, answer some questions about your interest and attach the following documents that they recommend you have ready when processing it:
- CV: It is recommended to detail specific skills, especially in writing and environmental issues (1-2 pages maximum).
- Cover letter: Explain why Mongabay should select you for this fellowship. Provide specific examples of your experience in journalism or writing, why you are interested in the opportunity, and examples of your ability to work remotely effectively and meet the program requirements (1-2 pages maximum).
- Writing examples: These may be published or unpublished articles on topics related to the environment and conservation.
- Applications for the Mongabay Latam program must be submitted in Spanish and the program will be conducted entirely in that language. Mongabay does not have a physical office and cannot offer work visas.
