The Asia Kakehashi Scholarship is the initiative announced by the Japanese Government back in 2017 to strengthen relations between Japan and the rest of Asia. The Program aims to heighten potential interest in Japan by promoting Bridge Building between high school students of Japan and Asia. This government-sponsored program is focused on facilitating intercultural exchange and understanding between teenagers of Japan and other Asian Countries.
Program Description
- Invite high school students in Asia and G7 member countries to study in Japan for 5 months.
- Attend Japanese high school while staying in a dormitory or with a host family.
- Exposure to Japanese culture, local communities and industries.
- Attend international camps (twice: together with arrival/end of stay orientations) with Japanese high school students.
- The Participants take part in activities to learn about Japanese society and values, develop leadership skills, and contribute to education about their own culture and country.
What is included in this scholarship?
- The scholarship covers domestic and international round-trip airfare, dormitory fees, normal school expenses, health insurance in Japan and all program costs.
Where will I live during this program?
- Students on the Asia Kakehashi Project+ will stay in dorms or with host families. Participants are not able to choose their placement. Short-term host families will be arranged during holidays and vacations for participants who are placed in dorms.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants to the program in 2024 must meet the following criteria:
- Between 15 and 18 years of age, born after April 2, 2006, and before April 1, 2009;
- Legal Citizen of one of the countries. (India, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh & Pakistan)
- Obtained a minimum of 60% marks in principle in all subjects in the latest examination at school and an overall minimum average of 60% marks in all subjects for the past two years;
- Learners of Japanese;
- Demonstrate the strong potential of leadership to act as a bridge between the home country and Japan during and after the program.
- Should not have participated in the ASIA KAKEHASHI program before.
- Priority will be given to students of families with low incomes.
