The Swedish Society for Medical Research (SSMF) is offering Postdoctoral Grant to give younger researchers the opportunity to gain merit in order to establish themselves as independent researchers.
The SSMF Postdoctoral Grant must be administered by a Swedish university or college and the grant recipient must be employed by or was affiliated with the grant administrator and registered in the public register in Sweden throughout the grant period.
Grants
- For full-time grants, the following applies:
- International: Years 1 and 2 abroad and year 3 in Sweden: For grant recipients who choose salary for all 3 years, employment with the grant manager applies for the entire grant period. For postdoctoral research conducted abroad, it is possible to choose to apply for a personal scholarship as a means of support during years 1 and 2 instead of a salary. For grant recipients who choose a scholarship, the recipient must be connected to the grant administrator during years 1 and 2 and then employed with a salary at the grant manager during year 3. Clinicians who choose to apply for a full-time international postdoc can, upon request, spread the last return year over two years. Part-time research must then be combined with half-time clinical duty in Sweden.
- Nationally: 3 years in Sweden: Only salary can be applied for as means of support for full-time research in Sweden. The grant recipient must be employed by the grant manager throughout the grant period.
- For half-time:
- Nationally: 3 years in Sweden: Research is combined with 50 percent clinical service in Sweden. Only salary can be applied for as means of support for part-time research. The grant recipient must be employed by or affiliated with the grant manager during the entire grant period. Research time can be spent abroad if desired and after agreement with the managing Swedish university.
Funding Information
- International full-time with salary
- The grant is SEK 1,150,000 per year for three years. During the third year when research is to be conducted in Sweden, the grant recipient is qualified for a return grant in the form of a framework grant of SEK 500,000. Total grant amount over three years: SEK 3,950,000.
- International full-time with scholarship two years and salary one year
- Tax-free, personal scholarship of SEK 336,000 per year for two years. A supplement can also be applied for to cover increasing living expenses in the host country. The supplement is applied for separately and is issued after an individual assessment. During the third year when research is to be conducted in Sweden, the grant recipient must be employed with a salary by the grant manager in Sweden and is then, in addition to the grant of SEK 1,150,000, qualified for a return grant in the form of a framework grant of SEK 500,000. Total grant amount over three years (excluding supplements): SEK 2,322,000.
- National full-time with salary
- The grant is SEK 1,000,000 per year for three years for full-time research at a Swedish university. Total grant amount over three years: SEK 3,000,000.
- National half-time with pay
- The grant is SEK 700,000 per year for three years for part-time research in combination with 50 percent clinical duty in Sweden. Total grant amount over three years: SEK 2,100,000.
Eligibility Criteria
- Eligible to apply are people who have completed a doctoral degree in a preclinical or clinical medical discipline, or in a subject area close to medicine.
- The time is counted from the defense date. This time period can be extended by a maximum of 24 months for sick or parental leave, AT/ST service and military service.
- To be eligible to apply, the applicant must have had research activities in Sweden for at least one year, which must be certified by an employer or supervisor. A requirement is also that the applicant intends to locate his future research in Sweden.
- The SSMF Postdoctoral Grant may not be used in parallel with other national or international research grants/scholarships intended for livelihood.
- Smaller scholarships and grants intended for costs such as operations, conferences or travel can be accepted.
- For recipients of SSMF’s international postdoctoral support where living expenses are not fully covered by SSMF’s grants, smaller, supplementary scholarships or grants from the foreign host institution may be accepted.
