Submissions Open: Grants for Literary Creation (Spain)

The Ministry of Culture is inviting applications for its Grants for Literary Creation to stimulate and finance the literary creation of original works, written in any of the official languages of Spain, as well as those with legal recognition in the statutes of autonomy.

Funding Information

  • The maximum amount of the grants awarded will be €1,000,000.
  • A total of 80 grants of €12,500 will be awarded for each selected work. In the case of co-authorship, the amount will be divided proportionally between the two authors.

Ineligible Projects

  • Only one project may be submitted.
  • In the translation category, the project must refer to foreign works in the public domain that have not yet been translated into the proposed Spanish language, or to works whose last translation into that language was more than 10 years old.
  • If the work is submitted to another competition, award, or grant call and is awarded the prize or grant in question, the authors undertake to withdraw from this call before the award decision is issued, submitting the documentation through the means established in section 6.2 of the call.
  • If there is a pre-agreement with a publisher for the publication of the work, it may not be published until the date of publication of the Resolution granting these grants.
  • If the author wishes to publish or premiere the work immediately, he/she must request in writing that the instructing body withdraw his/her application from this call.
  • Works that have already been published in print or any other medium, or that have been published, in part or in full, on blogs or any social media, or self-published works, works that have premiered in venues open to the public, may not be submitted.
  • Works created using generative artificial intelligence may not be submitted. The Sub-directorate General for the Promotion of Books, Reading, and Spanish Literature may verify whether the sample was created using generative artificial intelligence using whatever tools it deems necessary.
  • Comic creation projects cannot be submitted for these grants, since they are They will be governed by their own aid, convened by this same body.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Individuals of legal age, with Spanish nationality or residents of Spain; and must have at least one previously published work that is not self-published.
  • It is not necessary to be self-employed or registered as a professional to qualify for the Aid.
  • Co-authored works may be submitted with a maximum of two authors. Both authors must meet all the requirements established in the call and submit the required documentation.

Ineligibility Criteria

  • Legal entities, joint property associations, groups of public or private legal entities, as well as other entities without legal personality are expressly excluded from this call.
  • Persons who submit a work already published, in whole or in part, in the any written or digital media or theatrical works already premiered in venues open to the public.
  • People who apply for aid with projects that have already obtained some other aid subsidy, public or private, or award for such projects.
  • Any of the authors who benefit from the grants from the call for subsidies for literary creation corresponding to the year 2024.
  • All personnel who provide their services are excluded from this call professionals at the Ministry of Culture.
  • Works created using generative artificial intelligence.
  • Comic book creation projects cannot be submitted for these grants, as they will be governed by their own grant.

Application Requirements

  • Narrative: Minimum 45,000 words for novels, equivalent to 200 pages, and 22,500 words for short novels and stories, equivalent to 100 pages.
  • Poetry and poetic prose: more than 500 verses or equivalent.
  • Theater: minimum 15,750 words, equivalent to 70 pages.
  • Essay: minimum 34,000 words, equivalent to 150 pages.
  • Children’s and young adult literature:
    • Children’s literature: minimum 25 pages.
    • Young adult literature: minimum 34,000 words, equivalent to 150 pages.
    • Translation, from a foreign language to any of the official languages of Spain.
