SPRINT Grant Program for Researchers in São Paulo (Brazil)

Deadline: 30 June 2025

The Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo is requesting applications for the SPRINT to help researchers from the state of São Paulo on their journey towards internationalization.

This journey can be facilitated by the possibilities proposed by the Call, which range from initial international mobility to obtaining seed funding for the formation of research networks. Therefore, in this journey, the initial SPRINT proposal is valid for 12 months, which can be extended for up to 24 months, with budget additions, depending on the results obtained and the evolution of the collaboration.

As a result, it is expected that greater flexibility in collaboration will promote qualitative advances in ongoing research projects and also that partner researchers will work cooperatively to develop joint medium- and long-term research projects.

Purpose

  • Promote the engagement of researchers linked to higher education and science and technology institutions in the state of São Paulo with partner researchers from abroad to:
    • Advance qualitatively in ongoing research projects;
    • Work cooperatively to develop joint medium- and long-term research and innovation projects for submission to FAPESP – by researchers from the state of São Paulo – and to research funding agencies abroad – by partners.

Phases

  • Phase 1: Mobility proposals for researchers from São Paulo to foreign research institutions.
  • Phase 2: Proposals for mobility of researchers from São Paulo to foreign research institutions and for researchers from abroad to come to institutions in São Paulo.
  • Phase 3: Seed funding proposals for collaborations that resulted in the creation of a new research network and had very positive results.

Funding Information

  • Phase 1: Up to the equivalent limit of US$12,500.00 (twelve thousand five hundred dollars) for one year, resources may be requested for the mobility of researchers from the state of São Paulo on a scientific mission to the partner institution, in accordance with FAPESP regulations, and must be requested individually for each proposed researcher and per mission:
    • Airline Tickets
    • Travel Insurance
    • Daily allowances
  • Phase 2: FAPESP will support researchers from the state of São Paulo up to the equivalent limit of an additional US$12,500.00 (twelve thousand five hundred dollars) for a second year of validity, provided that the Principal Investigator submits for analysis and has approved by FAPESP, in addition to the Scientific Report, requests for amendments of the type Request for Change – Change of Validity, including the Research Project for the second year, and Request for Change – Change of Budget, including proof of arrival of the partner researcher (boarding passes for the trip).
  • Phase 3: FAPESP will support researchers from the state of São Paulo up to the equivalent of an additional US$25,000.00 for a third year of validity, provided that the Principal Investigator submits for analysis and has it approved by FAPESP, in addition to the Scientific Report clearly showing the benefit to São Paulo and the appropriation of knowledge with the partnership, requests for addendums of the type Change Request – Change of Validity, including the Research Project for the third year, and Change Request – Change of Budget, including the financial counterpart
  • In each phase, requests for extensions of up to six additional months under exceptional conditions and without additional resources will be accepted only upon presentation of authorization for extension by the partner institution.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligibility for proposal submission
    • FAPESP considers eligible to submit proposals in this Call:
      • Principal Investigators of ongoing FAPESP Research Grants in the following categories: Regular (except mobility projects and Young Doctors’ Retention), Thematic Project, Young Investigator, Initial Project (PI), Generation Project, Research, Innovation and Dissemination Centers (CEPID), Engineering Research Centers/Applied Research Centers (CPEs/CPAs), Science Centers for Development (CCDs), Public Education Program, Public Policy Research Program (PPPP) and Research Support Program in Partnership for Technological Innovation (PITE). Principal Investigators of ongoing Thematic Projects, CEPIDs, CPEs, CPAs and PITEs are also eligible to submit proposals.
      • Subject to the schedule, the expected start of the SPRINT proposal must be at least six months before the end of the term of the research project related to the proposal. Therefore, at the time of submission of the proposal, the linked process must be in force at least until 31/03/2026 for Issue 1, until 31/07/2026 for Issue 2 and until 30/11/2026 for Issue 3.
      • FAPESP may accept submissions related to research proposals that are under analysis of merit. However, if the proposal is still under analysis or has not been approved at the time the mobility proposals of this Call are selected, the SPRINT proposal will be canceled.
  • Eligible participants eligible for funding
    • Proposals must comply with the principle of reciprocity between the Parties with regard to the academic qualifications of those who will participate in the exchange activities.
    • For exchange activities under this Call, members of the team of the current Research Grant of this Call for Proposals are eligible, provided that they are previously defined as:
      • Responsible or Principal Researchers;
      • Associate Researchers linked to research institutions in the state of São Paulo;
      • Postdoctoral fellows with a FAPESP grant in force during the planned exchange mission;
      • Doctoral scholarship holders or Direct Doctorate holders with a FAPESP Scholarship in force during the planned exchange mission.
      • Only participants who are formally included in the current grant as team members approved by FAPESP will be considered.
