SIAM Support for Teaching Math Modeling Grant Program (US)

The SIAM STeMM Grant Program was developed to increase the number of teachers developing and/or implementing high-impact learning experiences where students get the chance to see how math and data can be used to answer important questions in the real-world. Awardees will share their lesson materials along with a reflection on the activity with SIAM.

Funding Information

• Grants of $750 will be awarded for development and/or implementation of a mathematical modeling activity in the classroom or for an extracurricular program.
• Teachers will receive $500 to develop and implement the activity, and will receive the remaining $250 upon receipt of the deliverables.

Expected Outcomes

• Develop and/or implement a mathematical modeling activity
• Deliverables to SIAM upon completion:
  • Materials/instructions another teacher could use to implement the activity in their classroom
  • A one-page reflection about the activity which may include:
    • suggested class size and level
    • prerequisite knowledge students need to be able to complete the activity
    • what worked well and what could be adjusted for improved outcomes
• Agree that SIAM can post/share any materials/pictures/quotes about the project

Eligibility Criteria

• Applicants must be secondary teachers (grades 7-12)
• Activity must have a mathematical modeling objective and involve a real-world scenario

Selection Criteria

• A review committee will consider applications and will take the following into consideration:
  • Clear mathematical modeling learning objective(s)
  • Feasibility for the class size and level
  • Likelihood that other teachers would adopt/adapt the activity for their own use
  • How interesting the activity would be for students

Application Requirements

• Title and description of the proposed activity (approximately two pages), including the proposed timeline for completion
• Description of the materials that will be shared (e.g., lesson plans, handouts, list of information about materials needed, etc.)
• A brief resume or CV
• Letter of support from a school principal, program coordinator, or equivalent.
