Deadline: 14 January 2025
Submissions are now open for the PCORI Funding Announcement (PFA) intended to move evidence developed with PCORI-funded comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) toward practical use in improving health care and health outcomes.
PCORI will fund projects that aim to implement patient centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) results obtained from PCORI-funded studies in decision-making settings. In selected cases, PCORI will also fund projects that focus on the dissemination of these findings or on preparing for implementation of these findings. This limited PFA gives PCORI investigators the opportunity—following the generation of results from their PCORI-funded research award—to propose the next step(s) for making their research results more useful, actionable, accessible, and available to targeted end users of these findings.
This funding opportunity gives PCORI awardees the chance, following the generation of results from their PCORI-funded research award, to propose next steps to move their findings into practice, while drawing from the knowledge and experience they gained during their PCORI-funded research award.
As such, PCORI seeks to fund Implementation Projects that propose an implementation approach comprising feasible and well-informed strategies to actively integrate evidence from PCORI-funded CER studies into healthcare delivery and other relevant settings in ways that increase its reach (i.e., the total number of individuals who will experience improvements in care), generalizability (i.e., the intervention’s applicability across different groups, systems, or settings), uptake (i.e., the use and adoption among more systems, settings, or sites), and potential for future scale-up. Specific strategies will vary based on a host of factors—including the evidence implemented, the population(s) targeted, and the goals of the proposed project—and should reflect comprehensive consideration of the barriers and facilitators in the proposed implementation setting.
Project Categories
- This PFA will support the following categories of projects:
- Implementation Projects: This PFA seeks to fund Implementation Projects that represent a logical and feasible next step for implementing clinically meaningful findings in ways that will significantly increase the reach, generalizability, uptake, and overall impact of the evidence proposed for implementation.
- Dissemination Projects: PCORI will also fund Dissemination Projects with the primary goal of actively spreading knowledge and awareness of evidence from PCORI-funded research studies and increasing targeted end users’ motivation and ability to use it.
- Implementation Planning Projects: PCORI will also fund Implementation Planning Projects in which investigator teams will complete preparatory work that they have identified as necessary for successful subsequent implementation efforts.
Funding Information
- Funds Available: up to $9 million per year. (PCORI may exceed this allotment depending on the number of meritorious projects received.)
- Maximum Project Budget:
- Implementation Projects: up to $2.5 million in direct costs.
- Dissemination Projects: up to $300,000 in total costs, with clear and adequate justification.
- Implementation Planning Projects: (Categories 1 and 2): up to $200,000 in total costs, with clear and adequate justification.
- Maximum Project Period: up to four years for Implementation Projects; up to three years for Dissemination Projects; up to two years for Implementation Planning Projects.
Eligibility Criteria
- PCORI Research Awardees: Recipients of PCORI-funded research awards are eligible to respond to this PFA. This includes recipients of Broad PCORI Awards, Pilot Projects Program Awards, Targeted PCORI Awards, Pragmatic Clinical Study Awards, and PCORI-funded demonstration projects occurring within the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network (PCORnet) infrastructure (e.g., ADAPTABLE and obesity trials). Receipt of a PCORI non-research award (i.e., Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award or Pipeline to Proposal Award) does not qualify for this limited competition PFA.
- Principal Investigator (PI): The proposed PI of the current application must be the PI of the original PCORI-funded research project, or a member of that project’s research team who played a significant role in the research project. If the latter, then the proposed PI must obtain a letter of support from the PI of the original PCORI-funded research.
- For Category 2 Implementation Planning Projects, the proposed PI of the current application must be the PI of the original PCORI-funded Implementation Award, or a member of that implementation project’s team who played a significant role. If the latter, then the proposed PI must obtain a letter of support from the PI of the original PCORI-funded Implementation Award.
Review Criteria
- The following are the merit review criteria for this PFA:
- Importance of Research Results
- Site Readiness for Implementation
- Technical Merit of the Proposed Implementation Project
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Evaluation Plan
- Project Personnel.
