The Gwaii Trust Society is inviting applications for the Food Sovereignty Grant to fund small projects that will contribute to improving local food production, harvesting and distribution in a way that is sustainable in the long term.
The ultimate goal is to improve food security and self-sufficiency on Haida Gwaii.
Funding Information
- Maximum application is $10,000. Projects that include partnerships and serve multiple communities may be eligible for grants up to $25,000.
- Equity requirement:
- Local non-profit organizations 25%
- Local governments 50%
- Standard project length at Gwaii Trust is one year from the approval date.
Eligible uses of the Grant
- Creation, expansion or improvement of community greenhouses, community gardens, food pantries or farmer’s markets
- Workshops on growing, harvesting, storing or preparation of local foods.
- Projects aimed at increasing local food system control, including access to fresh and healthy food.
- Strategic community planning around food sovereignty.
- Other projects related to improving the production or access to locally produced or harvested foods.
- Partnerships and initiatives that involve more than one community are encouraged.
Ineligible uses of the Grant
- Core funding.
- The purchase of perishable and/or non-perishable food.
- Businesses and individuals are not eligible to apply.
- Expenses incurred prior to approval.
