Impact Seed Funding Latin America 2024 – AI

Impact Seed Funding (ISF) is a microgrant offered by the Pulitzer Center to fund educational projects that enrich the perspectives and knowledge of the university community – specifically students and educators – about the problems, solutions and innovations related to the impact of artificial intelligence on our daily lives. Our proposal is to support projects whose ultimate impact is to inspire changes in perspectives, narratives and actions in society. In this way, the main objective of the scholarship is to create more informed audiences on under-discussed environmental issues.

Objectives

• They believe in the power of knowledge and the role of education and educators in addressing the multidisciplinary problems of tropical forest regions and the climate crisis. Therefore, the ISF is designed to provide seed funding to educators in Latin America, with the aim of raising awareness about socio-environmental issues. The ISF offers micro-scale support for:
  • Start new collaborations or develop existing ones between teachers, researchers, students and journalists;
  • Increase commitment between educational communities, journalists and indigenous and traditional populations;
  • Encourage the use of creative images (e.g. photographs, short videos, documentaries, podcasts), data images and information from reports in teaching materials, student activities, curriculum and classroom materials or scientific publications;
  • Facilitate the adoption of the results presented in the reports for relevant research and other scientific products.
• The ISF is designed to be flexible and responsive to the needs of educators and communities, allowing applicants to establish activities related to pressing rainforest and climate crisis issues.

Funding Information

• ISF subsidies reach up to US$ 4,500.00.
• They expect the projects to be executed within four months of their approval.
• Project Duration: The maximum duration of the proposal is four months.

Eligible Activities

• Examples of desirable activities and outcomes of ISF support may include, but are not limited to:
  • Production and dissemination of visual content (short videos, documentaries, podcasts, content);
  • Mini exhibitions on university campuses;
  • Journalism workshop for students.
  • Mobility/involvement of indigenous or traditional communities: Knowledge exchange activities, student visits, biodiversity expeditions, citizen journalism.
  • Communication activities to promote citizenship related to the proposed topics.
  • Support for research activities: Adoption of data to improve the accuracy of ongoing research, insertion of data or knowledge into a book chapter.
  • Insertion of results into teaching materials, campus debates, hackathons on social issues, student-led debates and dialogues.

Eligibility Criteria

• Applicants must be professors, researchers or groups of students guided by a responsible professor, based in a Latin American country.
• It is desirable (but not mandatory) that projects include partnerships with civil society and local social movements and indigenous or traditional community movements.

Requirements

• Proposals must use or be inspired by stories told by journalists supported by the Pulitzer Center for Artificial Intelligence;
• The activity must have an intended impact on audiences in the academic community (students or professors/researchers) or civil society.
