Grants for Production and Exhibition in Denmark

The purpose of Danish Arts Foundation’s Committee for Visual Arts Project Funding is to promote Danish and foreign contemporary art in Denmark, as well as Danish contemporary art abroad.

• Production of New Works:
  • If you are a Non-Danish artist, you may apply for grants to produce new works for exhibitions in Denmark. Please note that only artists are eligible as applicants for production grants.
  • Typical expenses covered include materials, production fees for artists, payments to others, and travel and accommodation related to production.
• Presentation:
  • Presentation and dissemination projects solely focusing on a Non-Danish artist intended for a Non-Danish audience are not funded.
  • Grants are however available for dissemination of Danish contemporary art to a Non-Danish audience in printed or digital form. Grants are also available for dissemination of Non-Danish contemporary art to a Danish audience in printed or digital form. The presentation must meet an audience, either through a distributing publisher, or an exhibition open to the public. It is not sufficient to have an agreement with a printing company. Art books, catalogues, and publications are funded only when especially relevant for the artist or the project.
• Exhibitions in Denmark or Abroad:
  • Exhibitions solely focusing on a Non-Danish artist intended for a Non-Danish audience are not funded.
  • Grants are however available for exhibitions featuring Danish and international contemporary artists in Denmark, as well as grants for exhibitions and fairs with Danish contemporary artists abroad.
  • Typical expenses covered include exhibition fees, technical equipment rental, installation, insurance for works, transport of works, and travel, hotel, or other expenses related to an exhibition but not directly tied to the production of the works.

Funding Information

• To provide context, the grant sizes from previous years can offer insights into the financial framework of the program:
  • Approximately 59% of grants are typically less than 25,000 DKK (approximately 3,300 €).
  • Approximately 82% of grants are less than 45,000 DKK (approximately 6,000 €).
  • The majority, approximately 96%, are less than 75,000 DKK (approximately 10,000 €).
  • The committee receives nearly 1,500 applications for the program, with typically 50% of them receiving grants. The program distributes approximately €3.1 million, yearly constituting roughly half of the committee’s annual funds.

Ineligible Projects

• Permanent works in public space. This area lies under the Committee for Visual Arts Grants.
• Studio rental
• Per diem allowance
• Invitations, meals, etc. in connection with exhibition previews
• Travel and accommodation for assistants (generally not covered)
• Travel and accommodation in connection with exhibitions in galleries where the artist has a permanent affiliation
• Local transport
• Projects that the committee has previously processed (reapplications)
• Exhibitions that opened before the application deadline
• Expenses from previous calendar years. Only expenses from either the current or the next calendar year can be entered in the requested budget
• Gallery exhibitions: Artists may apply for grants for the production of works. Other expenses for the exhibition are only covered if the committee assesses them as a special investment by the gallery

Eligibility Criteria

• Non-Danish artists are eligible to apply if they intend to create a visual work of art for exhibition in Denmark.
• Non-Danish venues may apply if they plan to exhibit the works of contemporary Danish visual artists outside Denmark.
