Applications are now open for the Development Grant for Global Majority Artists to empower and amplify the voices of global majority artists.
Calderdale is turning 50 in 2024. To celebrate Calderdale Council is hosting a Calderdale Year of Culture (CYOC24) from April 2024 to April 2025. They want to encourage creativity and activity in Calderdale and share this across the region.

Objectives
- Offer micro commissions to global majority artists, enabling them to create and showcase their work in Calderdale.
- Facilitate cultural exchange and dialogue by supporting work that explores diverse perspectives, experiences, and cultural traditions.
- Promote inclusivity and representation by highlighting the contributions of global majority artists and ensuring their voices are heard and valued.
- Attract and engage new audiences by presenting diverse and culturally rich artistic expressions that resonate with a wide range of community members.
- Support artistic innovation and experimentation by providing opportunities for artists to push boundaries, challenge norms, and explore new forms of expression.
Funding Information
- There are 10 commissions of £1000 each available.
- If there are applicants requiring less than £1000, they will be able to provide more micro commissions. £1000 is the upper limit. You are welcome to apply for less.
Who can apply?
- Individual artists living or based in Calderdale.
- Funded activities must take place in Calderdale and be for the benefit of the communities of Calderdale.
- Artists must also be:
- Financially viable
- Have demonstrated the ability to manage work effectively
- Can evidence effective policies in equality and diversity, safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant identifies as a global majority artist
- Funds must be spent by the end of April 2025
- Artists should engage with underserved or marginalised communities and address relevant social or cultural issues. Work in development must align with the Year of Culture 2024 objectives.
- Work must demonstrate inclusivity, accessibility, and cultural sensitivity in their approach.
- Improve sustainability by minimizing environmental footprint where possible
Ineligible
- The fund will not support:
- Fundraising events where there is private gain.
- Applications from students unless the project is separate from or does not form part of their studies.
- Prize money.
- Applications for support towards the cost of attending courses in Further or Higher Education.
- Purchases of large items of equipment or assets.
- Touring productions.
- Capital works, renovation, or conservation projects will not be supported by the scheme. Reasonable and proportionate materials and equipment can be supported and will need to be justified in the application.
- Projects in deficit.
- Projects which have taken place.
- Activity for commercial gain.
