Deadline: 31 October 2024
The Hinrich Foundation is inviting research proposals to support trade research projects that advance the understanding of global trade issues and support policy development.
Objective
- The objective of research program is to support informed policymaking and business decision making through analysis and insights on global trade issues. They aim to provide easily accessible research products for stakeholders of trade, who may be government agencies, companies, advisers, media, trade professionals, think tanks, NGOs, industry associations, chambers of commerce, academia, or students.
Focus Areas
- While the Foundation’s research program promotes research across many sectors, they strive to highlight areas of study that require more attention, notably:
- Sustainable Trade: Trade should deliver mutually acceptable benefits between trading partners and achieve balanced economic, environmental and social outcomes.
- Digital Trade: Open digital trade and cross-border data flows create opportunities for more inclusive growth, particularly in emerging markets. But the rise of ‘data sovereignty’ is threating to fragment the global digital economy and limit the potential of new technologies.
- Foreign Direct Investment: Foreign direct investment (FDI) has been crucial in supporting developing economies to participate in global trade by facilitating the flow of capital, talents and knowledge. To understand its transformational power, they measure FDI’s impact on economic growth in the Asia Pacific region and discuss policies for maximizing its benefits.
- Free Trade Agreements: Free trade agreements can remove trade barriers and increase the flow of goods and services between countries. They assess various agreements – whether multilateral, plurilateral or bilateral to understand how FTAs can impact the global economy and individual countries.
Eligibility Criteria
- They invite researchers and/or research organizations to submit proposals for such projects.
Application Requirements
- They kindly ask that research proposals include the following information:
- Name and credentials of the researcher(s)
- Synopsis of the proposed research:
- They encourage the synopsis to address major trade-related themes and preferably pose two to four key questions that the research seeks to answer.
- The researcher should specify the method of research (primary or secondary).
- Format:
- They generally publish research in the form of white papers of around 4,000 words and articles of around 1,600 words. All research products will be subject to the Foundation’s editorial review. The final decision to publish such research will be at the discretion of the Foundation.
- The researcher may propose:
- A new research project, which may include any combination of article and/or white paper deliverables.
- An overview or summary of the researcher’s existing work, including work already published elsewhere.
- Deliverable Timetable:
- They encourage projects to be completed within four (4) months from the point of commission.
- The researcher should update the Foundation at mutually agreed regular intervals on the progress of the project. They encourage the researcher to take into account feedback from their research program team on the progress and findings.
- The researcher may be asked to deliver one or two articles in the interim of around 1,600 words, prior to completion of the project, to summarize the interim findings of the ongoing research.
- Funding Request:
- Funding is negotiable and is typically paid at the point of completion of the project.
