The NHC Toka Tū Ake invites researchers and practitioners to submit proposals for biennial grants.
Goal
- Their goal is to invest in research and capability targeted at reducing the risk of impacts from natural hazards on people, property, and the community.
Objectives
- Invest in research and capability that are aligned to the organisation’s legislative functions and strategic goals and objectives.
- Coordinate research investment across the research sector to maximise outcomes.
- Improve the visibility of the research we invest in so that it can be used to reduce risk.
- Develop researchers’ capability in communicating their research and effectively collaborate and engage with policy, practice, and wider communities.
- Support research that seeks to understand and draw on diverse world views and perspectives and that supports improved outcomes for all communities.

Funding Information
- The indicative total funding of this Biennial Grant Contestable Round is approximately $1.2 million (excluding GST). Each individual grant will be between $50,000 and $100,000 (excluding GST) for a term of up to two years.
- The proposed projects should be feasible within a two-year timeframe, commencing in January 2026 (or before 1 April 2026).
Eligibility Criteria
- For proposals to be eligible under the Biennial Grants round, they must:
- be made by a New Zealand-based researcher, research organisation, or legal entity representing a New Zealand-based research organization
- New Zealand-based researcher can apply as an individual.
- be designed so that the majority of the benefits in new knowledge accrue outside of the research organisation or legal entity which represents the research organization
- not be made by a department of the public service as listed in Schedule 2 of the Public Service Act 2020
- be for research related activities, the majority of which are to be undertaken in New Zealand, unless there are compelling reasons to consider the proposal
- advise that the proposed funding recipient will adhere to the terms and conditions of funding set out in the Research Funding Agreement contract
- not be for activities already funded elsewhere
- clearly explain how the project has the potential to:
- provide a benefit to insured persons (whether or not the research also has the potential to provide a benefit to persons who are not insured persons);
- reduce the future cost of providing natural hazard cover.
- if led by a post-graduate student, be supervised by an academic supervisor who monitors closely the quality of the research
- produce research outputs that will be publicly available and able to be used by other researchers, practitioners and the public
- not exceed $100,000 excl. GST or be for less than $50,000 excl. GST
- not benefit a Russian state institution (including but not limited to support for Russian military or security activity) or an organisation outside government that may be perceived as contributing to the war effort.
