The Wellcome Trust is seeking applications for its i4A Access Grant for low- and middle-income country researchers to access imaging infrastructures and training opportunities.
Goals
- Access Research Track – for conducting experimental research at any imaging facility or laboratory.
- Access Skills Track – for gaining new imaging skills through a personalised, hands-on learning experience at any imaging facility or laboratory.
Funding Information
- A budget of up to EUR 10,000 (ten thousand euros) is available per project.
- i4A Access Grant typically supports access to hosting imaging facilities for a duration of 1 – 4 weeks.
- This amount covers imaging facility access fees for the use of imaging instruments, related services, reagents and consumables, as well as visa processing costs, travel insurance, meals, and travel and accommodation.
Eligibility Criteria
- Any researcher or imaging facility staff or management affiliated with a not-for-profit organisation (e.g. university, institute) located in a low- and middle-income country (LMIC) is welcome to apply.
- All applications will undergo an administrative feasibility check, to ascertain that they secure the highest standards of efficiency, competence and integrity.
- The administrative feasibility check will also ascertain if applications will be incompatible with relevant legal frameworks, including sanctions and export controls.
- Individual applicants will be considered as the grant recipients and not their affiliated institutions.
- Successful applicants must comply with the Wellcome Trust grant conditions and grant funding policies, European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) travel reimbursement.
- Wellcome Trust does not fund activities that involve the transfer of grant funds into mainland China.
- Wellcome Trust expects that applicants do not hold or are not employed on a research grant from the tobacco industry.
- Wellcome Trust and therefore EMBL, may not be able to fund you if you, anyone associated with your grants, or your grant activities, are: the target of international sanctions or located in a country that is the target of international sanctions.

- The applicant’s motivation in applying for the grant is clearly stated and appropriate.
- Impact
- The access opportunity has the potential to impact the grantee’s scientific work.
- Dissemination
- The applicant has concrete plans to disseminate the knowledge to his/her local scientific community.
- Justification of the choice of the imaging facility
- Sample logistics, availability of equipment and expertise suitable for the proposed project.
Evaluation Criteria
- Planning and timeline
- The planning of the visit and objectives are reasonable.
- The objectives are achievable within the proposed timeline.
- Relevance
- The proposed goals align with the applicant’s research and/or career interests.
- Motivation
- The applicant’s motivation in applying for the grant is clearly stated and appropriate.
- Impact
- The scientific visit has the potential to have a positive impact on the grantee’s scientific work/career.
- Dissemination
- The applicant has concrete plans to disseminate the knowledge to his/her local scientific community.
- Justification of the choice of the imaging facility
- Availability of equipment and expertise suitable for the proposed goals
