The Copyright Agency is pleased to announce applications for its Cultural Fund to support Australian creative writers and visual artists with grants to create new work.
Categories
- Create Grants provide a living allowance for writers and visual artists at key stages of their career:
- Creative writers can apply to write their second book in the following literary genres: fiction, poetry, children’s literature, young adult literature, picture book illustration, graphic novels, playwriting, literary non-fiction and writing for performance (plays only). Create Grants are intended to support authors at a key time in their career to write their second book.
- Visual artists can apply to create new work for their fourth exhibition. Create Grants are intended to support visual artists who have had some work exhibited in solo exhibitions and who are at key stages in their career.
Funding Information
- Grant amount: $20,000
- Up to five grants will be awarded in 2025
- Duration: Projects should start after 1 August 2025.
Eligibility Criteria
- Creative writers:
- Authors must have professionally published/performed by the application closing date only one full-length work of their own creative writing (including professionally presented plays) by an Australian-based publisher/theatre company
- Authors must have secured either a publishing contract for the work or a letter of interest or intent to publish/present from an Australian-based publisher or theatre company. This must be submitted with the application.
- Visual artists:
- Visual artists must have exhibited by the application closing date only three solo exhibitions in public or commercial galleries (this should not include group shows). These exhibitions should be independently and professionally curated
- Solo exhibitions as part of an Artist Run Initiative (ARI) will count towards your eligibility if the exhibition has been independently and professionally curated
- If applicants are working in collaboration, all applicants must meet the eligibility requirements
- Visual artists must have confirmed interest from an Australian public gallery or institution to exhibit the work. Confirmation of this must be submitted with the application.
Ineligibility Criteria
- Creative writers:
- The following authors are not eligible to apply for Create Grants. Authors who have:
- self-published their books
- co-authored their first book
- written and published short films/film scripts
- written work primarily for the scholarly or academic market
- The following authors are not eligible to apply for Create Grants. Authors who have:
- Visual artists:
- Visual artists who do not have only three solo exhibitions of their own work are not eligible to apply for a Create Grant
- Visual artists cannot apply to create work for publication or catalogues of their work
Assessment Criteria
- Applications are assessed by an independent panel of peers from the writing and visual arts sectors
- Peers will assess all applications for their literary or artistic merit. This includes:
- Project description: Clear description and details of your planned work
- One-page CV: List of publications, plays, or exhibitions
- Samples of work: Samples from your proposed project/new work or from previous work (or a combination of both)
- Contracts or Letters of Interest/Intent: From publishers, presenters, or galleries.
