Apply for REFLEKT Residency Programme

Deadline: 16 June 2024

Goethe-Institut Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines together with SAVVY Contemporary and TanzFaktur are looking for three-month residency applications that encourages the artists/curators/art practitioners in residence to expand their research, develop a concept/prototype, build a project, or create an artwork together with the hosting organizations and local communities.

Ideally, after completing the residency, the residents would continue their work and present them in their city of origin with the local Goethe-Institut as a host.

This year, they offer in total two slots for artists, curators, and art practitioners to work and engage with respective art scene and public in Germany for three months with the following preferred hosts:

SAVVY Contemporary (Berlin)

  • SAVVY Contemporary is keen to collaborate with an artist, thinker, researcher, and cultural professional who is active in developing artistic organizations, educational projects, neighbourhood initiatives and public research programs. In the midst of transition and growth as an independent institution, they are interested in initiating long-term engagement on topics, such as: Afro-Pacific cultural and art-historical affinities, role of artists in cultural management, innovative and critical approaches in exhibition-making, intersections between social development and artist-run entities, accessibility in precarious conditions and aesthetic strategies in cross-sectoral mobilization.

TanzFaktur (Cologne)

  • TanzFaktur is a contemporary dance venue founded by Slava Gepner to offer local audiences weekly classes and a yearly dance programme. Founded in 2014, TanzFaktur is an independent arts venue promoting contemporary dance, theatre, and dance films. They work at a local, national and international level bringing the best of these disciplines to local audiences. Since 2019 their work focuses on dance and theatre performances, somatic and physical practices, academic ties, professional development, mixed able bodies, physical theatre, and new circus. TanzFaktur hosts and cooperates with Hochschule für Musik und Tanz, and Deutsche Sporthochschule dance department in the city of Cologne.

Benefits

  • The Goethe-Institut will cover the costs for airfare to Germany (return, economy class), visa and travel expenses for visa appointment, travel insurance, as well as accommodation during the residency.
  • Artists will receive a lump-sum of fee and daily costs of € 3.000 for the whole residency and a subsidy for production/research € 600.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The following requirements are a prerequisite to be eligible for residency with SAVVY Contemporary:
    • Based in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Timor-Leste.
    • English will be the residency’s communication language. Since the residents are expected to actively engage during the residency, basic understanding, and comfort in spoken English will be required.
    • Artists, thinkers, researchers, and professionals with relevant experience, having worked in the arts sector for at least ten years or holding a relevant degree/master’s degree.
    • Applicants should have experience participating in an international exhibition, production, commission, festival, residency program, or conducting research.
    • Practitioners with research-based and public-oriented engagements in their practices are strongly encouraged to apply. Prospective residents are expected to engage with the members and the larger community of the organisation. SAVVY Contemporary does not have studio spaces for production.
    • Applicants are advised to consider the institutional history of SAVVY Contemporary and its ongoing programs. They need to express the program that they are interested to be involved in.
  • The following requirements are a prerequisite to be eligible for residency with TanzFaktur:
    • Based in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Timor-Leste.
    • English will be the residency’s communication language. Since the residents are expected to actively engage during the residency, basic understanding, and comfort in spoken English will be required.
