The Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council is seeking applications for its Creation Grant Program to support Indigenous artists, artistic groups and culture carriers within their community for the creation, development, exhibition, and transfer of knowledge related to an art form or artistic practice.
Grants are available to Indigenous artists at any stage of their artistic career, working in all disciplines.
Funding Information
- There are two funding streams available:
- Creation Micro-grant: up to $1,500 for small-scale projects, general materials, and related expenses.
- Creation Grant: (projects running less than 1 year) up to a maximum of $15,000. Successful applicants may be awarded a minimum of 75% of eligible project expenses.
- A maximum of $15,000 may be awarded to an applicant annually, across all ArtsNL programs (excluding funding through the Professional Artist Travel Fund and the Accessibility Support Fund).
Eligible Activities
- Research, development, creation, presentation and transmission of knowledge related to artistic work. This includes arts/cultural training and mentorships, and initiatives that pass on cultural knowledge through artistic practice.
Ineligible Activities
- Large capital purchases (i.e., funds used to buy or upgrade equipment and/or machinery)
- Work/activities that have already been completed
- Work/activities that have already been funded
- Fundraising activities
- Work/activities by for-profit businesses, governments, councils, bands, and/or other related groups or organizations with designated funding streams
- Prizes or awards
Eligibility Criteria
- To apply to the Creation Grant Program, you must be:
- Indigenous (applicants will be expected to explain their relationship with their culture and Identity);
- An Indigenous artist or culture carrier;
- An Indigenous artistic group or artistic collective;
- A resident of Newfoundland and Labrador for a minimum of one year at the time of application; and
- Over the age of 18.
- Artists can apply as:
- Individual Artist: A single artist representing themselves
- Group: A group of artists practicing as one (such as a band or theatre group)
- Collaboration: A collection of individual artists or groups who come together to create with one another
- Activities including collaborations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists must be Indigenous-initiated, Indigenous-led and Indigenous-benefiting.
