The Northern Heart has launched its Northern Doc Fund Scheme to nurture emerging filmmakers to influence change in the industry from the ground up.
They support new talent with funding, mentorship, access to industry and a platform to display their work, empowering them to grow as confident documentary makers. In 2025-2026 Northern Heart they will be supporting 2 x emerging documentary filmmakers from working class backgrounds based in the North of England.

- Mentor & Masterclasses
- You will have a dedicated mentor to offer advice and guidance on making your short documentary.
- You will also have the opportunity to join industry masterclasses throughout the scheme.
- Post Production support
- Sticks & Glass will be providing each filmmaker the opportunity to have a professional sound mix and colour grade so your films look and sound great on the big screen!
- Cinema screening
- They’ll celebrate your films by hosting a film screening at Leigh Film Factory in Greater Manchester. This is the perfect chance to showcase your work on the big screen in front of industry guests.
- 1 x Sheffield DocFest pass
- Each filmmaker will be awarded an industry pass to Sheffield DocFest 2025. You’re welcome to soak up a week of films, industry talks and networking to help your career.
- Wellbeing support
- New for 25-26, Film in Mind will support each filmmaker with consultation and therapy should you require it.
Funding Information
- 2 x winners will receive a £3,000 cash grant.
Eligibility Criteria
- Directors only can apply for the scheme. This includes self- shooting directors or Producer/Directors.
- You must currently live in the North of England.
- You must be from a working class background and can demonstrate lack of financial resources and limited connections in the industry.
- Previous Doc Fund winners are not eligible to apply again.
- You must be 18 and over and not currently in full time education.
- They are prioritising directors who haven’t directed programmes for streamers or broadcasters before.
- They are prioritising applications from directors who haven’t received any substantial support or funding to make their work.
- They will need to see some of your film work or creative work in your application. Even zero budget or student work, they want to see your potential as a storyteller.
- If shortlisted you must be able to attend the public pitch at LA1 Shorts at Dukes Theatre in Lancaster on the 17 May 3:30 – 5:00pm. Travel bursaries will be provided.
- You must apply with an idea to make a short up to 10 minute documentary and have full access to your story at the time of applying.
- They would expect all winners to make the most out of the scheme, the prizes and the opportunities.
- They would expect to see some form of crew collaboration in your creative treatment. Whether that’s collaborating with a Producer, Sound recordist, Editor or Cinematographer.
- All films must be completed by February 2026.
- All films must be 10 minutes or less which includes all credits.
