Applications open for IBRO Early Career Grants

IBRO is deeply committed to enabling neuroscientists to develop their research without disadvantages due to gender, ethnicity, disability, class, and/or other factors. The need to close gaps due to underrepresentation, gender roles and stereotypes that bias the full career development of women and underrepresented communities is fundamental to achieving a more just society. This award therefore aims to support disadvantaged early career principal investigators by providing supplementary funding.

Priority will be given to early career neuroscientists belonging to underrepresented or historically excluded groups in the field. Examples of such groups include, but are not limited to, ethnic minorities, women, those from lower socio-economic backgrounds, transgender researchers and those with disabilities.

The International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) is the global association of neuroscience societies established in 1961 that aims to promote and support neuroscience around the world through training, education, research, outreach and engagement activities, and the publication of two journals, Neuroscience and IBRO Neuroscience Reports.

• Maximum grant amount is 5,000 EUR

Funding Specifications

• Funds cannot be spent on salaries, travel or conference related expenses.
• Preference will be given to those who have not previously received, nor expect to receive, substantial support from other sources.
• The institution must agree that no indirect costs/overheads will be charged.
• Proposed projects should be completed in a maximum of one year from the time of award.
• The required funding report should be submitted no later than 3 months following the end of the project.
• Funds will transferred according to an 80:20 format, meaning 80% of the grant will be awarded two months prior to the start date of the project, and the remaining 20% upon completion and submission of the associated grant report.

Who can apply?

• Eligible applicants are:
  • early-career researchers who
    • have started their first independent laboratory within the last 5 years, and
    • currently hold a principal investigator position.
• Applicants will be asked to:
  • specify how this award will help them overcome barriers and progress their work,
  • submit a proposal indicating how funds will be spent and to justify their significance to the project(s).
  • Some examples of support include purchase of research equipment, laboratory reagents, software licences, publication fees, importation taxes or childcare. However, applications need not be restricted to this list and they welcome other cases for support.
  • provide a letter of support from their home institution or departamental chair confirming their status as an independent principal investigator.
• Regional Eligibility Requirements
  • Applicants residing in one of the Africa, Asia-Pacific, or Latin America are eligible to apply for this program.
  • Applicants residing in one of the Pan-Europe or US-Canada regions are not eligible to apply for this program.
