Deadline: 12 June 2025
Applications are now open for a series of special student grants being offered by the Anglo-Israel Archaeological Society to UK students of archaeology, religious studies, and related subjects.
Recipients will be given a place on the Tel Azekah archaeological project for a four-week field season, to take place between 20 July 2025 and 15 August 2025.
Students will have the opportunity to work on the dig and attend lectures on archaeology and ancient history and culture while staying on Kibbutz Netiv Ha-Lamed-He, close to the site. They will also have free time on the weekends to travel within Israel.
Funding Information
- A number of awards of £3,500 per person are offered competitively to UK-based students.
Costs Covered
- The grants are intended to cover the full cost of return travel to Israel from the UK and the cost of acceptance on the programme (covering board and lodging from Sunday to Friday).
- Grant recipients will be expected to cover the cost of weekend accommodation and activities outside the dig themselves.
Eligibility Criteria
- To receive one of their grants, you must be an undergraduate or postgraduate student of archaeology, religious studies or related subjects, and studying in the UK or, if studying outside the UK, hold a UK passport.
- The grants will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and evidence of a likely gain in knowledge, skills and experience to complement the applicant’s studies.
Application Requirements
- Recipients of AIAS grants will be expected to write a short, illustrated report about their experience in Israel, to be submitted to their Administrator by the end of October 2025.
- These will appear on their website and may also be published in their journal Strata. You will also be asked to make a short recording of your experiences with the Tel Azekah project to be posted on their website.
