Eureka Fellowship for Youth Changemakers in Canada

Deadline: 8 June 2025

The AstraZeneca Canada and Plan International Canada are looking for inspiring youth changemakers across the country to join the Eureka Fellowship to make Canada – and the world – a healthier, more sustainable and equitable place.

Now in its second year, this national fellowship aims to identify, accelerate and amplify the impact of the next generation of sustainability leaders working to improve the health of people, society and the planet.

Funding Information

  • Each Eureka Fellow’s registered charitable organization or community project will receive $10,000 to help further the objectives of their initiative.

Benefits

  • Support Learning and Leadership Development. Eureka Fellows will participate in a virtual curriculum that’s delivered over the course of the 18-month Fellowship. The curriculum will provide training and capacity-building for Eureka Fellows through a series of virtual workshops.
  • Build Broader Awareness and Connections. The Eureka Fellowship will enhance awareness of sustainability initiatives the Eureka Fellows are leading. Fellows will also participate in an in-person Summit in the final year of the Fellowship, providing opportunities to build connections with other youth leaders and stakeholders in the health, environment and not-for-profit sectors.
  • Create a Community of Sustainability Leaders. All Eureka Fellows will be invited to join the Eureka Fellowship Alumni Network. The network will provide an opportunity for Fellows from every class of the Eureka Fellowship to connect, share learnings and support each other.

Eligible Projects

  • Focuses on promoting policies or actions that enable healthy lifestyles and equitable access to healthcare information and services, and/or focus on biodiversity/climate action to positively impact human health, with a specific focus on ensuring that efforts are inclusive and accessible to all.
  • Incorporates a focus on community/systemic change through public policy, advocacy and/or public engagement primarily led by young people.
  • Is inclusive and non-discriminatory in its approach working with marginalized or vulnerable people.
  • Is working with underserved communities.
  • Is measurable and is able to demonstrate impact. Projects must provide an end-of-year (December 2025) and end-of-program (December 2026) report including, but not limited to, total number of young people reached directly, policies influenced/result, lessons learned and impact.

Ineligible Projects

  • Discriminate or primarily promote political or religious viewpoints to their beneficiaries.
  • Use the funds to make grants or financial donations to other organizations or individuals.
  • Be primarily a medical course/s.
  • Provide bursaries, tuition, scholarships or fees for an existing course.
  • Provide treatment, promote medicines, provide medical advice or pay for medicines.
  • Benefit AstraZeneca’s commercial business.
  • Do not have a measurable impact within 18 months of the Fellowship.
  • Have already taken place.
  • Be funded more than 50% by another source, aside from the AstraZeneca/Plan International Canada funding. Note, if project is being run by a registered non-profit/charity, this proposed project must meet this criteria.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Aged 18-30 by the end of December 2025.
  • Proficiency in English or French (speaking, reading, writing).
  • Living in Canada.
  • Ability to fully participate in the Fellowship from July 2025 to December 2026.
  • Willingness to share insights, help co-create commitments to action, foster partnerships, and serve as ambassadors of AstraZeneca’s health equity and Young Health Programme work as well as Plan International Canada’s youth leadership programs, where appropriate.
  • Access to the internet and a device (computer, phone) that will allow participation in live, online Fellowship sessions-this will not be provided to fellows.
  • Applicants must be founders or leaders of a community impact project or registered non-profit/charitable organization focused on improving the health of people, society and the planet, with a particular focus on health equity, health system resilience, biodiversity and climate action, and indicate interest in accelerating the impact of their project.
  • Are ‘funding-ready and able to provide appropriate documentation (in English) to AstraZeneca and Plan International Canada to verify their project’s governance and financial statements, and ability to report quantitative and qualitative impact from their project. If the required documentation is not available, it may impact the ability of the project to receive funding and Fellowship may be withdrawn.

Selection Criteria

  • Selected individuals are expected to fully participate in the Eureka Fellowship. Any misrepresentation, or inability to fully participate and complete verification in a timely manner may jeopardize their Fellowship benefits and funding eligibility.
  • If, after selection, the screening and verification process determines that the projects do not meet the eligibility requirements as outlined above, they will be unable to receive funding and the individual’s participation in the Eureka Fellowship may be withdrawn.
