Deadline: 17 March 2025
The Journalist-in-Residence Fellowship is for Dutch speaking journalists with a keen interest in scholarly research who need an extended period of time to focus on a longer piece of journalistic work.
The Journalist in Residence Fellowship is intended for journalists with a good command of English who need a period of uninterrupted time to do research and/or complete an extensive piece of work – e.g. a non-fiction book, series of articles, podcast, documentary or multimedia production – that will be published in Dutch by at least one Dutch-language publisher.
Journalists at NIAS benefit from being able to work without interruption, while at the same time being part of the lively academic environment at NIAS with a wide range of disciplines from the humanities and social sciences. Previous Journalist-in-Residence Fellowships have proven that the exchange of ideas with scholars from the humanities, social sciences and other disciplines can enrich a journalist’s work. In this way, the fellowship contributes to the production of in-depth journalistic writing. At the same time, the journalist’s perspective, research methods and modes of communication open up new avenues for the scholarly work of other fellows.
As a journalist-in-residence, you will have the opportunity to fully dedicate yourself to a major journalistic project for five months and to immerse yourself in an intellectually stimulating environment. There is room for two journalists each year.

Eligibility Criteria
- You can apply for a grant for the NIAS residency if you are working on a major journalistic project that is already somewhat advanced and would benefit from an interdisciplinary, academic and international exchange of knowledge and expertise. NIAS organizes weekly English-language seminars, where one fellow presents his or her research project and is then questioned by the other fellows about, among other things, the design, methods and sources used. NIAS expects all fellows to be present at the institute as much as possible.
- Both freelance journalists and employed journalists are eligible for the grant. If you are employed, you must take unpaid leave. By journalists they also mean podcast makers, documentary makers, photojournalists, etc.
