- Marilynn Thoma Fellowship in Art of the Spanish Americas: The Carl & Marilynn Thoma Foundation offers predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships annually in support of projects and research initiatives that will advance the study of the art of the Spanish Americas.
- Thoma Foundation Research & Travel Awards in Art of the Spanish Americas: Congruent with the Marilynn Thoma Fellowship, the Foundation offers annual grants to scholars, curators, art historians, and advanced graduate students working on MA theses or PhD dissertations in support of projects and research initiatives that will advance the field of the art of the Spanish Americas.
Funding Information
- Marilynn Thoma Fellowship in Art of the Spanish Americas:
- Predoctoral Dissertation Research Fellowship: $50,000 (one-year award)
- Postdoctoral Research Fellowship: $65,000/year (one to two-year award).
- Thoma Foundation Research & Travel Awards in Art of the Spanish Americas:
- Grants of up to $25,000 are available for projects lasting up to six months.
Eligibility Criteria
- Pre-doctoral fellowship applicants must be:
- At least 21 years old
- Enrolled in an accredited doctoral program in the field of Art History, History, Architectural History, Religion, or a related field
- Additionally, post-doctoral applicants must:
- Hold a PhD conferred between 2014-2024
- Applicants for all awards must:
- Be able to communicate and conduct research in both English and Spanish
- Propose a project that focuses on the Art of the Spanish Americas, particularly with reference to painting or sculpture. Projects that focus exclusively on decorative arts, manuscripts, or maps will not be considered.
Ineligibility Criteria
- Applicants may not:
- Apply on behalf of an organization
- Be a board member, current employee, contactor, advisory committee member, or current selection committee member of the Thoma Foundation, or an immediate family member of such a person.
Application Requirements
- Completed application form
- Project abstract (limit 300 words)
- Project proposal (limit five double-spaced pages, plus up to two optional pages of images) outlining the goals of the project and the progress made to date, its engagement with current debates within the field and relevant scholarship, its methodology or theoretical approach, the significance for the field, and the measurable outcome (product). Project proposals need not only result in scholarly monographs; other possible outcomes include museum exhibitions, dissertations, scholarly essays, and leisure series
- CV (limit five pages)
- Work plan timeline, including any travel and projected milestones
- Bibliography (limit one page) of sources that the scholar will draw from in framing and carrying out the project
- Transcripts (pre-doctoral fellows only)
- Budget
- Evidence of local support (Research & Travel Award only). This might include email communications with institutions whose collections and archives will be critical to the success of the project or a narrative description of the applicant’s efforts
- Two letters of reference (pre-doctoral applicants must include a letter of reference from their dissertation advisor(s)).
