Apply for ICCROM Fellowship Programme

Deadline: 15 September 2024

Applications are now open for the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) Fellowship Programme to bring fresh perspectives, facilitate the exchange of knowledge and ideas and stimulate new avenues of research that will enrich the field of heritage conservation.

Through the programme, senior professionals who are nationals of ICCROM Member States or working in organizations therein can apply to undertake a period of study at ICCROM to pursue their research.

Objectives

  • Focusing on World Concerns for Cultural Heritage
    • Objective 1: Protect Cultural Heritage in Times of Crisis: Promote effective Disaster Risk Management Strategies in situations of conflicts, disasters and complex emergencies.
    • Objective 2: Support Africa’s Cultural Heritage: Develop training, capacity building and partnerships in keeping with strengthening Africa’s conservation efforts.
    • Objective 3: Foster Emerging issues of Cultural Heritage and Conservation: Provide innovative and effective responses to emerging issues, such as the interlinkages of nature/culture, and sustainable development.
  • Creating a Diverse and Inclusive Global Network
    • Objective 1: Lead and Innovate Capacity Building at Local, Regional and International levels: Promote wider access, engage with new ways to deliver content and foster partnerships by addressing challenges and opportunities at all levels.
    • Objective 2: Enhance Community Engagement in Protecting Heritage: Facilitate social inclusivity by addressing concerns of communities connected with cultural heritage in all ICCROM programmes.
    • Objective 3: Strengthen Awareness of Cultural Heritage and Conservation: Raise the position of cultural heritage conservation within national and international policy frameworks.
  • Strengthening and Transforming Iccrom for the Future
    • Objective 1: Strengthen the Foundations of ICCROM: Reinforce ICCROM’s position with other international organizations, expand partnerships and increase the number of Member States.
    • Objective 2: Increase the Impacts of Service Delivery and Visibility of ICCROM to Member States and Heritage Communities: Maintain credibility, responsiveness, and promotion of ICCROM’s achievements worldwide, highlight the role of ICCROM in activities, and increase the donor base for funding relevant and time-sensitive programmes.
    • Objective 3: Modernize and Invest to Assure an Effective and Efficient Organization: Ensure that the investment in human and financial resources gives added value and that management and information systems provide for improved performance and accountability. Utilize the best means of electronic and media delivery to increase the effectiveness of training and outreach for the organization.

Focus Area

  • Proposals on any research topic connected to heritage conservation are welcomed; however, those directly relevant to ICCROM’s Strategic Directions are encouraged.

What you will get?

  • Due to current budgetary constraints, ICCROM is not in a position to provide financial support for fellowships. During their fellowship, Fellows are provided with office space, a computer workstation and unlimited access to the internet and stationery; in addition, Fellows have full access to ICCROM’s documentation, library and archives services.
  • Fellows are responsible for arranging their travel, accommodation and personal insurance. ICCROM assists Fellows in obtaining the necessary documents to enter and temporarily reside in Italy or the UAE and, when possible, in finding reasonable accommodation. Valid major global medical and accident insurance coverage for the full period of the fellowship is compulsory.

Duration

  • Fellowships can be of variable length, between 2 and 6 months. Other time frames may be considered if justification is given. At the end of their fellowship, Fellows are asked to present their research to staff and external guests. After completing their fellowship, Fellows will also be contacted by ICCROM to provide feedback on their fellowship and its outcomes.

Why you should apply?

  • A fellowship at ICCROM is a unique opportunity for reflection and study while engaging in the life of an international organization. During their time at ICCROM, Fellows benefit not only from direct access to one of the world’s most extensive conservation libraries (with holdings in over 70 languages) as well as ICCROM’s archives but also through exchange with staff and other heritage professionals. It is an occasion to gain new insights at the international level and establish new professional relationships.

Location

  • Fellowships can be undertaken at ICCROM headquarters in Rome or the ICCROM-Sharjah Regional Office in the UAE.
  • Subject to the agreement of ICCROM, Fellowships may be undertaken partially online if justification is given.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Individuals who specialize in a discipline related to cultural heritage, either as researchers, teachers or practitioners, are welcome to apply. Candidates must hold at least a Master’s degree or higher in an area related to cultural heritage and have been professionally active in the field for at least ten years.
  • While research can be conducted in any language, Fellows are expected to have a good knowledge of one of ICCROM’s two official languages (English and French).
