ArtsEquator invites applications form mid-career arts critics and journalists, for the ArtsEquator Fellowship, who are creating critical content about the arts in Southeast Asia.
They are looking for applicants who are interested in being a voice for their community, spotlighting artistic works in their country, offering insight into subjects that are not often explored, and being a part of the wider arts network in Southeast Asia.
The second cycle, in 2024 is focused on theatre, dance and film in Southeast Asia. Fellows will work on 5 reviews that can be delivered in writing, video or podcast format, and 1 in-depth essay. The are looking for content that offers insights into what is happening in the arts in their respective countries.
Not more than seven (7) Fellows will be selected for this cycle. Shortlisted candidates may be contacted for further interviews.
Funding Information
- This Fellowship is conducted remotely and does not require any travel. It provides a stipend totalling SGD5,000 for the Fellowship period from 1 July 2024 to 31 Dec 2024. It is open to critics and arts journalists from Southeast Asia only.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
- This Fellowship is open to citizens and permanent residents of the following countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
- Successful applicants must be based in and active in their own country at the period of the Fellowship.
- Applicants will be applying as an individual, not under a company or an organization.
- Applicants who hold employment elsewhere must demonstrate that they will be able to meet the deliverables of the Fellowship.
- Applicants must not receive other payments or grants for the content produced under the ArtsEquator Fellowship.
- The Fellowship is for mid-career writers in the arts with the following criteria:
- Applicants have at least 5 years of actively writing in the arts in any Southeast Asian country.
- Applicants have a proven track record. Applicants must have written criticism, reviews, essays related to arts practice, and/or other content formats such as podcast, radio, video etc, in a sustained manner for media space such as print, online publications, blogs, journals, etc.
- Applicants must have an existing channel to publish, circulate and distribute the Fellowship content – via existing websites, news portals, own social media accounts, substack, newsletter, blog, podcast channel or video channel that reaches their local community.
- Applicants should demonstrate interest in and responsibility towards the arts community of applicant’s own country and have a track record of contributing to it.
- Applicants should have the ability to provide social and historical context to his/her/their work and when discussing art works.
- Applicants have the ability to work independently and keep to assigned deadlines.
- Applicants must be comfortable communicating in English for the purpose of the Fellowship.
- Applicants who have applied previously but not selected, can apply again with a new project. Fellows who have been selected before cannot apply again.
Submission Guidelines
- Application forms and materials must be submitted in English.
- Applicant can only apply with the same proposal once. Future applications must not have the same project proposal.
- Applicant can only apply once per cycle.
- There is no fee to apply.
- Applications are sent by email and an acknowledgement receipt will be sent.
- Only successful applicants will be contacted.
- Applicant may be contacted for an interview or additional information during the selection period.
