The African Leadership Centre (ALC) is pleased to announce a call for applications for Peace, Security & Development Fellowships for the academic year 2024/2025.
The ALC Fellowship programmes seek to produce high performing graduates with identifiable leadership characteristics and skills, who generate cutting-edge research on peace, security and development and participate in institutional, national and regional networks to train and mentor the next generation of African academics.
Core Values: All activities related to the ALC programmes are guided by a set of core values that include: promoting African-led ideas and processes of change; the pursuit of excellence; encouraging independent thinking; respect for diversity in all its forms – not least gender, religion, class and beliefs; recognition of youth agency; and integrity.
African Leadership Centre Fellowships
- Fellowships for African Scholars in Peace Security and Development (degree awarding)
- This award is available to young African scholars who are interested in pursuing research and academic careers in peace, security, and development. It encompasses an eighteen-month period, comprising rigorous academic research, writing and policy analysis in the field of peace and security and a six-month attachment to an African University, a Regional Organisation, or a Centre of Excellence based in Africa to acquire practical experience. Fellows gain academic knowledge within the MSc Global Leadership and Peacebuilding programme at King’s College London and benefit from uniquely tailored mentoring sessions. During the fellowship, fellows contribute to the African Leadership Centre’s ten-year research agenda entitled “Peace, Society and the State in Africa.”
- Fellowships for African Women in Leadership and Peacebuilding (degree awarding)
- This fellowship is available to young African women, particularly from conflict-affected contexts, interested in pursuing research, policy and practice careers in the field/s of peace, security and development and with an emphasis on leadership. It includes post-graduate study at King’s College London on the MSc Global Leadership and Peacebuilding programme and a uniquely tailored mentoring programme. During the fellowship, fellows contribute to the African Leadership Centre’s ten-year research agenda entitled “Peace, Society and the State in Africa.”
- Fellowships for African Women in Peace, Security and Development (non-degree awarding)
- This award is available to young African Women in the early stages of their careers seeking to deepen their knowledge and experience in the fields of Leadership, Peace, Security and Development. It is a residential program based at the ALC in Nairobi, Kenya. Applicants to this non-degree fellowship programme may also be considered for the Early Career Peace, Security and Development Fellowship. Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates must be female citizens of African countries. Candidates from conflict-affected contexts are encouraged to apply.
- Successful candidates must hold valid travel documents prior to acceptance.
- Candidates must hold a master’s or bachelor’s degree and additional professional experience will be valued.
- Candidates must have knowledge of, or experience of women’s rights, gender and development issues.
- Candidates must be able to demonstrate a commitment to contribute to work on peace, security and development in Africa and show how a post graduate degree would enable them to do this.
- Candidates must be able to demonstrate capacity to undertake research on issues relating to peace, security and development in Africa.
- Candidates must demonstrate commitment to the core values of the programme: Promoting African led ideas and processes of Change; Independent thinking; Integrity; Pursuit of Excellence; Recognition of Youth Agency and Respect for diversity in all its forms.
- Candidates must have a demonstrable plan for how to utilise knowledge gained through the Fellowship, upon return to their countries and/or organisations.
- Candidates must be fluent in spoken and written English as all aspects of the programme are delivered in English. An English Language Proficiency test will be required to gain unconditional acceptance on to the MSc.
