The Starving Artist Initiative is thrilled to announce an open call for submissions for the upcoming digital exhibition and publication, “The Strings That Bind Us”.
This exhibition aims to shed light on the interconnectedness of the shared human experiences while raising awareness and advocating for individuals affected by AIDS and HIV through the transformative power of art. They invite artists from diverse backgrounds to creatively express their perspectives, stories, and messages relating to this critical issue.
Artistic Mediums
- Artists are encouraged to explore diverse artistic mediums, including but not limited to:
- Painting, drawing, and illustration
- Sculpture and installation
- Photography and digital art
- Mixed media and collage
- Performance and interactive art
- Video art and animation
- Note: They are especially keen to share work from artists in the African diaspora, lived-in experiences or passionate voices for this project.

- This exhibition holds immense significance in several key impact areas, which are crucial to address the challenges surrounding AIDS and HIV advocacy:
- Stigma
- This exhibition challenges stigma through art, breaking down barriers and promoting understanding and compassion for individuals living with AIDS and HIV.
- Challenging Narratives
- Artistic interpretations disrupt stereotypes and reshape the narrative surrounding unwell bodies, highlighting the strength and humanity of individuals with AIDS and HIV.
- Embodied Experiences
- Artists explore the lived realities and emotions of those affected by AIDS and HIV, fostering empathy and deepening the understanding of their experiences.
- People-Centered Solutions
- Art serves as a catalyst for change, inspiring action and advocating for community initiatives, healthcare access, & policies prioritizing the well-being of those affected by AIDS & HIV.

- By submitting your artwork to the Starving Artist Initiative for consideration in “The Strings That Bind Us” exhibition and publication, you acknowledge and agree that:
- Approval for Use: The Starving Artist Initiative has permission to use and showcase your artwork for marketing, image use, and publication purposes related to the project.
- Image Use: The initiative is allowed to reproduce images of your artwork for promotional and documentation purposes, including digital and print media.
- Publication and Exhibitions: Your artwork may be included in “The Strings That Binds Us” digital publication and showcased in related exhibitions organized by the Starving Artist Initiative with no monetary compensation (they aim to support and pay artists but no guarantees).
- Note: The Starving Artist Initiative is not responsible for any loss, damage, or theft that may occur during the submission process, exhibition, or publication.
