SUSI Global Student Leaders Program – Egypt

Deadline: 20 December 2023

The U.S. Embassy in Egypt has launched the Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) for Student Leaders Program.

The Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) for Student Leaders is an intensive five-to-six-week academic program designed for foreign undergraduate student leaders to improve their understanding of the United States while simultaneously enhancing their leadership skills.

Each institute includes approximately 20 participants from selected countries. The Institutes consist of a four-week academic residency consisting of interactive classroom activities, seminar discussions, readings, group presentations, and lectures. Site visits, leadership development, cultural activities, and community service complement the coursework and academic sessions. If conditions allow, the Institute will include a one-week integrated study tour in the United States. The five-week program will take place beginning in late June 2024 (program dates are not subject to change).

Topics

  • 2024 Study of the U.S. Institute Program includes the following topics
    • Economic Empowerment
      • The SUSI on Economic Empowerment will enhance participants’ knowledge of U.S. history, government, institutions, society, and culture within the context of the theme. Participants will receive an overview of the U.S. economic system and structures while exploring sub-themes such as economic prosperity and opportunity; building sustainable economies; inequities within economies; financial access and inclusion; entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial ecosystems; social entrepreneurship; social capital development; financial literacy; organizational development and management; and adapting to the future of work.
      • The tentative program dates are from June 22 to July 25, 2024.
    • Religious Diversity and Democracy
      • The SUSI on Religious Diversity and Democracy will enhance participants’ knowledge of U.S. history, government, institutions, society, and culture within the context of the theme. Participants will explore the intersection of religious diversity and pluralism with American democracy; the First Amendment and separation of church and state; early religious traditions and the current religious landscape of the United States; conflict resolution and interfaith dialogue in a democracy; and the engagement of faith groups in civil society and the voluntary sector.
      • The tentative program dates are from June 22 to July 25, 2024.
    • Madeleine K. Albright Young Women Leaders Program on Civic Engagement
      • The SUSI on Young Women Leaders on Civic Engagement will enhance participants’ knowledge of U.S. democratic principles and society, culture, values, and institutions, while developing their leadership skills in areas such as critical thinking, communication, decision-making, and management. The Institutes will incorporate a focus on American historical events as well as contemporary American life including current political, social, and economic debates in a pluralistic society. The curricula will include content on current U.S. and global women’s issues, such as: progress and opportunities for women’s leadership; combating violence against women; addressing income disparity and other challenges to women in the workplace; women’s health issues; and the ways in which women can contribute to global peace, security, and stability.
      • The tentative dates are from June 21 to July 26, 2024.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Be between the ages of 18 and 25 years old.
  • Have at least one semester left of their undergraduate studies and be committed to returning to their home universities following completion of the program.
