The U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program provides emerging student leaders with a scholarship for one semester of non-degree academic study at a U.S. college or university.
The program is designed to increase participants’ understanding of the United States and enhance their leadership skills through academic coursework, community service, and professional development activities.
During the exchange semester, Global UGRAD students live and learn on-campus alongside their American peers, complete 20 hours of community service, and enroll in full-time undergraduate coursework, including one U.S. Studies course. Students also participate in an end-of-program workshop in Washington, DC, to develop their leadership skills further, network with their global cohort, and prepare for re-entry.
Goals
- Enhance students’ academic knowledge, English language, and professional skills needed to pursue long-term academic and career goals.
- Cultivate students’ comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the United States and encourage them to share their own perspectives and cultures with Americans.
- Empower students to engage constructively in the civic life of their U.S. host and home communities, mindful of diversity, equity, inclusion, and access principles.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant must be a citizen of Kazakhstan;
- Be at least 18 years old by August 2025;
- Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing at an accredited academic institution of Kazakhstan;
- Have completed at least one semester of university by January 2025;
- Must have at least one full academic year of undergraduate study remaining after May 2026;
- Be able to communicate in English. If selected, applicant must be able to achieve a minimum TOEFL score of 48iBT to be considered. If the score is between 48-60, the applicant will be considered for virtual English Language Training before the exchange portion of the program. A minimum score of 61 is required to participate in the exchange portion in the United States.
- Be committed to service in your community.
- Preference will be given to those with little or no experience in the United States or outside their home countries.
- Applicants are required to return directly to their home country after completing the program.
- Students studying at regional universities are encouraged to apply;
- Students with GPA over 3.0 out of 4.0.
