The Society for Conservation Biology with its Conservation Letters Cover Contest invites all SCB members and friends to participate in a friendly competition for a new cover image for the journal.
Conservation Letters is dedicated to publishing groundbreaking research and innovations in conservation science that make a real impact on policy and management worldwide. The focus is on short, punchy articles and reviews that are useful and interesting to a wide international audience and address the most pressing and urgent challenges in conservation science. The subject matters spans people, nature, and human-nature interactions.
They’re searching for high-quality, visually compelling designs that embody the mission of Conservation Letters.
Themes
- The cover should evoke the broad themes of conservation science, including:
- Ecological and human diversity.
- Nature’s contributions to people and their value to society.
- The beauty of the natural world, in both human-dominated and untouched landscapes.
- The practice of science.
- Connections between biodiversity conservation and society.
Prize Information
- Winner: A 3-year SCB membership and journal subscriptions.
- 2nd Place: A 2-year SCB membership.
- 3rd Place: A 1-year SCB membership.
- All winners will be featured on SCB’s website, social media, blog, and in the journal’s issue debuting the new cover image.
Eligibility Criteria
- They encourage a high diversity of submissions. All entries should initially be submitted as high quality images to the Google Drive folder.
- Each entry should have a brief caption of up to 200 words that explains what the image shows and how it relates to conservation science. Separately to the caption, please also include the details and context under which the photograph was captured or design was created and the date (if possible) and location (if applicable).
- They kindly request that entries do not use Artificial Intelligence to generate graphics, and that competitors observe copyright, intellectual property, and any other restrictions on any graphics or images that they incorporate. SCB will not accept liability for any copyright violations.
Selection Criteria
- The winning image and two runner-ups will be selected based on this vote and the decision of the selection committee.

- File Naming: Name your file
- Caption
- Provide a brief caption of up to 200 words that explains what the image shows and how it relates to conservation science. Separately to the caption, please also include the details and context under which the photograph was captured or design was made and the date (if possible) and location (if applicable).
- Photographer/Artist Information
- Include your name, email address, a brief biography and description of where you took the photograph, or of how you created your design.
