The Edinburgh Printmakers is inviting applications from early-career artists (up to 5 years professional experience) with a passion for intaglio and etching processes to undertake bespoke supported paid residencies in their studio in Edinburgh, Scotland.
6 residencies over two years will be awarded to talented early career printmakers, supporting the development of etching and intaglio skills to enable them to pursue a high-level career in printmaking. 3 residencies will be awarded to graduates with up to 3 years’ experience and 3 to artists with 3-5 years professional experience.
Artists will be awarded a residency bursary and a year-long membership to the studio. They will be supported by Edinburgh Printmakers’ studio printmakers. Accommodation will be provided in their onsite artists’ flat.
The residency artists’ work will be produced and exhibited as a Folio of the Fellows’ work for both the Jerwood Collection, and Edinburgh Printmakers Collection.
Program Specifications
- They will select a total of 6 artists to take part in the Jerwood Residencies at Edinburgh Printmakers, each residency with a duration of 15 days.
- The residencies aim to be an empowering platform for artists with a clear passion and drive in the etching process to develop their practice and experiment with printmaking in a supportive environment, make new connections within the printmaking community, and for their work to be professionally produced, exhibited, and viewed by a variety of people.
- During the residency, artists will be supported to work in the print studio to produce work and experiment with their practice, a selection of which will be part of the Folio of Fellows’ work.
- As part of the residency, artists will be supported to deliver an artist talk which will reflect on their time during the residency.
- One work by each resident artist will be retained for the archive at Edinburgh Printmakers.
- Artists will have research opportunities to visit museums and galleries in Edinburgh and Scotland to support their practical work.
- Participating artists will be subject to an artist’s contract.
Benefits
- 15 days access to their print studio facilities, with induction, training, technical support, and a materials budget.
- Self-catering accommodation.
- 15 days accommodation in their onsite artists flat (self-catering) in Edinburgh.
- Artists will be offered a fee based on Scottish Artist Union rates. These range from £226 per day (8 hours) for New Graduate Artists and up to £283 per day (8 hours) per month for Artists with 3-5 years’ experience.
- A year-long membership that can be used after the residency has concluded.
Eligibility Criteria
- The residencies are open to:
- Early career artists with up to 5 years’ professional experience.
- Those with previous experience of printmaking or who have an artistic practice that involves printmaking or demonstrate a clear enthusiasm for the process of etching.
- Applicants must be living in the UK at the time of application.
Selection Criteria
- Applications will be reviewed by Edinburgh Printmakers. Shortlisted artists will be invited to attend an online or telephone interview with a selection panel, comprising three people from Edinburgh Printmaker’s team and a guest reviewer.
- Applications will be selected based on the artists’ demonstrated interest and ability in a printmaking process, originality of artwork and potential to develop their practice through the residency.
