The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation competition encourages the participation of Visual Arts artists from Portuguese-speaking African Countries (PALOP) in international artistic residency programs, through the allocation of an amount destined to grants for artists in residence, national and resident in one of the PALOP.
Objectives and Priorities
- This regulation aims to establish the rules for the granting of support within the scope of the PALOP Artists Mobility in Visual Arts competition.
- The PALOP Artists Mobility in Visual Arts competition aims to award 12 grants and has the following objectives:
- To enable artists from the PALOP (Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe) to attend artistic residencies outside their countries of origin;
- To support the development of the artistic work of the beneficiaries in dialogue with other contexts of contemporary artistic creation;
- To encourage the recognition and international circulation of artists from the PALOP.
- The PALOP Artists Mobility in Visual Arts competition is an initiative of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, which provides travel grants to the selected artists.
- The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is not responsible for the application or placement of candidates in the institutions hosting artistic residencies, only for providing the travel grants.
Funding Information
- 12 grants will be awarded, totaling €2,000 per candidate, with the aim of enabling them to attend artistic residencies outside their countries of origin, supporting the work of beneficiaries in dialogue with other contexts of contemporary artistic creation and encouraging the recognition and international circulation of artists from these countries.
Eligibility Criteria
- National artists and artists resident in one of the abovementioned PALOP countries may apply for support under this regulation, whose applications demonstrate significant merit, talent and excellence, as defined in this regulation.
- The following are the conditions of eligibility:
- To be national and resident in one of the PALOP countries: Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique or São Tomé and Príncipe;
- To have previously been admitted to an artistic residency in visual arts;
- To submit a complete application, in accordance with the requirements specified in this regulation, including:
- the artist’s CV, including information on academic training, artistic training and artistic production in the last 3 years, which may include links to view works;
- a letter of motivation that must include the candidate’s motivations for undertaking the artistic residency, in particular, the specific reason for choosing this residency; the placement of the artistic residency in the artistic career of the candidate (current and future); and the expected results (immediate and future) in the artistic career of the candidate.
- letter of invitation from the host institution where the artistic residency will be carried out;
- detailed program of the artistic residency explaining the work that the candidate intends to develop. d. Additionally, one or more letters of recommendation relevant to the application may be attached.
- The following may be exclusion conditions:
- Failure by the candidate to comply with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation;
- Submission of more than one application per candidate;
- Absence or incompleteness of the mandatory documentation required for the application.
