National Young Reporters for the Environment Competition (Malaysia)

The National Young Reporters for the Environment Competition is back for 2025! This annual competition challenges youth from 10 – 24 years old across Malaysia to raise awareness of environmental issues through writing, photography, and videography. If you’re passionate about storytelling and sustainability, this is your chance to make an impact!

Thematic Areas

The Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) programme aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting a holistic and community-driven approach to sustainability. Participants are encouraged to explore real-world environmental challenges in their communities, connecting their work to key SDG themes.
Before choosing their topics, young reporters reflect on how their stories, photos, or videos relate to the global sustainability agenda. The programme focuses on three core themes of creative environmental journalism, guiding participants to produce impactful, solution-driven reports:

- Climate Change

Eligibility Criteria

All Malaysian youth, age 10 to 24 years old are eligible for this competition.

Application Requirements

Article Writing:
- Format: Must be submitted in Microsoft Word format (docx.)
- Content: The article must be in English only.
- Writing Quality: Plagiarised or AI-generated content will be disqualified.
- Balanced and Objective: While personal opinions can be included, the article should present multiple perspectives and remain fact-driven.
Photo Story:
- Format: JPEG or PNG, with a resolution of at least 150-300 DPI
- Content: Participants can submit a maximum of three to five photos.
- Technical and Artistic Quality: Photographic works must be produced in technical and artistic manner.
- Visual Quality: Well-composed, with good lighting, colour, sharpness, and subject matter. The photo should be visually appealing and technically sound.
Environmental Campaign Photo:
- Format: JPEG or PNG, with a resolution of at least 150-300 DPI
- Content: The description and caption should link the photo with the environment topic and/or provide a solution to the environmental issues presented in the photo.
- Technical and Artistic Quality: Photographic works must be produced in technical and artistic manner.
- Visual Quality: Well-composed, with good lighting, colour, sharpness, and subject matter. The photo should be visually appealing and technically sound.
Environmental Campaign Video:
- Format: Must be uploaded on Youtube with the visibility set to either ‘Unlisted’ or ‘Public’
- Content: Clearly communicate an environmental issue, solution, or call to action
- Language: Videos is preferably made in English. If the video is in Malay, English subtitles must be included.
- Copyright: Use only copyright-free music and visuals or obtain proper licenses
Reportage Video:
- Format: Must be uploaded on Youtube with the visibility set to either ‘Unlisted’ or ‘Public’
- Content: Utilise observation, research, interviews and proper documentation
- Editing and Effects: Minimal special effects; the focus should be on storytelling and accuracy
- Copyright: Use only copyright-free music and visuals or obtain proper licenses.
