Entries are now open for L’Oréal-UNESCO-ABC “For Women in Science” Program to promote and encourage young Brazilian women in Science, identifying and rewarding talented young scientists in the fields of Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences and Chemical Sciences.
In 2025, for the first time, a scholarship will be launched for the area of Engineering Sciences and Technology. For 20 years, the Program has annually honored eight women for the quality of their research and encouraged them to pursue brilliant careers in Science, anywhere in Brazil.
The Grant-Aid Program selects and supports quality scientific projects to be developed for 12 months in Brazil. The selected researchers must have conducted research in Brazil in the last four years. In the case of a prolonged visit to a foreign institution, during this period, the researcher must have maintained a scientific relationship with a Brazilian institution.
Funding Information
- The value of each scholarship is R$50,000.00 (fifty thousand reais) to be applied over twelve (12) months.
Uses of the Funds
- Use of the Prize funds for the development of the submitted research project:
- Acquisition of consumables;
- Acquisition of equipment;
- Travel and daily allowances for participation in conferences and short-term trips (scientific trips to laboratories located in Brazil or abroad);
- Travel and daily allowances for short-term visits by Brazilian or foreign researchers to the fellow’s laboratory;
- Expenses related to field work;
- For any other expenses, the fellow must ask the person responsible for the L’Oréal Group in Brazil.
Responsibilities
- The selected researchers must develop their Research Projects in Brazil, during the period of validity of the Grant (12 months).
- Scientific publications related to the submitted project must include thanks to L’ORÉAL-UNESCO-ABC for Women in Science for the assistance received.
- The choice to receive the Grant must be kept confidential until the date stipulated by the Program organization, and must not be disclosed to the press or disseminated on social media.
- Winners must agree to be photographed, filmed and interviewed for purposes related to the “For Women in Science program. Photos, videos and texts will be used in publications and audiovisual/social media, including written press, television, internet, corporate publications and exhibitions, among others.
- Winners must notify L’Oréal and ABC if they change their place of work, change the location where the research will be carried out or withdraw.
- At the end of the two-year period, the selected researchers must submit, electronically, to L’Oréal and ABC, a report of no more than two pages, with a brief description of how the Grant was applied and how it contributed to the research activities, the progress of the scientific project and the benefit to other researchers or the institution. Any publications related to the project must be attached.
- L’Oréal and ABC encourage the selected researchers to develop, over the next two years, activities that encourage science in elementary/high schools, in order to awaken interest in research among young Brazilians.
- Suggestions for activities include lectures, workshops, classes. Reports of these activities are requested to be sent electronically to L’Oréal and ABC.
- Selected researchers must participate in the official ceremony and in events related to the Award that take place throughout the year.
Eligibility Criteria
- The candidate must meet the criteria specified below. Applications that do not meet these criteria will not be considered.
- Have completed the doctorate from:
- After 01/01/2017 for women without children;
- After 01/01/2016 for women with only 1 child;
- After 01/01/2015 for women with 2 or more children
- Propose to carry out research at a Brazilian institution suitable for the development of the submitted project
- Conducting research in the areas of Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Chemistry or Engineering Sciences and Technology.
- Have an updated “curriculum vitae” on the Lattes Platform.
Selection Criteria
- The selection of the seven winning candidates will be made by a jury composed of 22 (twenty-two) researchers, members of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), a representative of the L’Oréal Group in Brazil and a representative of UNESCO in Brazil, and will be chaired by the President of the ABC. Its decision is final and un-appealable, and cannot be contested or subject to explanations or justifications.
- The jury will establish selection criteria involving the quality and impact of the project and the work previously developed by the candidate. Other characteristics may also be considered, such as the candidate’s independence and potential for the success of the project.
- The winners will be informed at the end of the selection process. The announcement must remain confidential until a date to be communicated by the Program organization.
