The Goethe-Institut Kairo is proud to announce an open call for independent artists from all artistic disciplines and practices to apply for the use of one of the TakhshĪna workspaces located at 5 Bustan Street, Downtown Cairo, to work on their projects.
Guidelines
- Artists and practitioners can apply to use one of the three workspaces Studio TakhshĪna, Atelier Takhshina and Annex Takhshina4.
- Each space will be provided with essential equipment; specific equipment needs must be highlighted in the application.
- TakhshĪna does not support production, catering, transport, travel, or accommodation costs. Although, applications from outside Cairo are welcomed.
- Selected artists and practitioners are encouraged to organise open studio visits during or after their occupancy. Dates must be communicated and arranged in advance.
- TakhshĪna is an open, accessible, and safe space. However, the workspaces are not currently accessible by wheelchairs.
- TakhshĪna will have two open calls per year, with the first open call covering the period from March to July and the second open call covering the period from September to December.
- At the end of the occupancy period, artists and practitioners will be required to complete a report on the progress of their project and feedback on their residency.
- Artists using the workspaces for rehearsals would have access to a small dressing room.
- A locker room is available for artists and practitioners to store their materials and tools, although capacity is limited.
- The in-house technician is not available daily. For special requests, a minimum of 2 days’ notice is required.
- Since the building is also used for the Goethe Institute’s language courses, the operation of the workspaces must not conflict with the operation of the language courses, i.e. the music and sound must not affect the regular operation of the language department. The house rules need to be respected.
Duration
- Artists can apply to use one of the three workspaces for 1 to 4 weeks.
- Durations can only be uninterrupted/ connected when applying for Atelier Takhshina.
- Studio TakhshĪna and Annex Takhshina4 are available for shorter connected periods or interrupted extended periods.
- Schedules will be discussed and agreed upon with selected artists according to the availability of the three workspaces. – Artists can use the workspaces within the working hours: 10:00 am to 10:00 pm.
Eligibility
- Application is open to artists, art practitioners, groups and collectives residing in Egypt regardless of age, gender, artistic discipline, and practices.
- TakhshĪna encourages female artists to apply.
- Applicants should demonstrate a clear and detailed description of the activity or project they intend to work on during their stay.
