The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (FAAM) Artist in Residence Program invites artists from across Japan and worldwide, including but not limited to Asian countries and regions.
The program provides them with opportunities to stay in Fukuoka, create and exhibit their artworks so that they can encourage each other to achieve their full potential and expand careers to the world. FAAM hopes Fukuoka citizens get a deeper understanding of contemporary art, Asian art, and different cultures through their engagement in this program. Building human and organizational networks on international levels will also be the goal for FAAM to function as a center of interaction in Asian art.
Benefits
- Expenses for international and domestic travels ex.) round-trip travel fees from home to Fukuoka (economy flights or train tickets, etc.)
- Accommodation Artists from abroad/Japan will be staying in an accommodation designated by FAAM (including fees for breakfast and dinner each day).
- Living expenses (including lunch and local transportation fees) specified by Fukuoka City regulations. Artists from Fukuoka are eligible only for local transportation fees.
- Expenses for art making and exhibition ex.) art materials approved by FAAM, and other costs for making and installing the works, etc. (for a maximum of 500,000 JPY).
- Expenses for art exchange programs ex.) art materials, etc. approved by FAAM.
- Publicity costs for the residency artist’s exhibition ex.) flyers, signs, SNS, etc.
- Art insurance during the residency artist’s exhibition.
Eligible Activities
- Art-making
- Artists should utilize their working environment in Fukuoka for their art making and projects, to present them in public. FAAM will provide support for art-making as well as collaborations with local professionals in the art field and universities, etc.
- Art Exchange Program
- Artists should conduct 2 workshops and 2 talk events, etc. for the people of Fukuoka, including children and general participants.
- Exhibition
- Artworks or results of activities created during the residency period will be on view at the residency artist’s exhibition or open studio. FAAM will actively support and publicize applicants’ activities on the residency.
Eligibility Criteria
- Acceptable applicants must fulfil the following requirements:
- Have a degree of experience in contemporary art fields and are expected to expand careers on international levels in the future.
- Expected to continuously engage in activities and interact with people related to Asian countries and regions.
- Be able to work for the FAAM artist in residence program for around 5 days a week.
- Speak basic Japanese or English sufficient for daily communication in Japan.
- Be able to submit a letter of recommendation written by a responsible person from an art professional, institute or group.
Application Requirements
- Artists are not allowed, in principle, to bring their family to Fukuoka.
- The artist is required, in principle, not to return home or to visit other countries during the period of the residency.
- Artists should afford the expenses to handle their artworks and other materials after the exhibition and send them to their homes.
