The City of Nanaimo is seeking submissions from youth artists (ages 13 – 20) for an artistic design that will be used to celebrate and share information about the Youth Lounge.
The Youth Lounge is a free program for youth between the ages of 11 – 18yrs, offered in partnership with BGC Central Vancouver Island. It runs on Thursdays from 3-7pm, and Fridays from 2-9pm at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre.
The Youth Lounge provides opportunities to spend time with friends, make new friends, play games, find a quiet space to work independently, and engage with others in a fun, inclusive, supervised space. The Youth Lounge offers a variety of free activities such as swimming, skating, air hockey, foosball, video games, homework support, pizza nights and much more.
Amenities include: wi-fi, charging stations, snacks, music, comfortable seating, board games, movies, PS5, virtual reality, and more.
The youth artist whose artwork is selected will receive a $500 honorarium and will work with project coordinators in the digitization of their artwork (when necessary) and the implementation of their design for Youth Lounge communications material.

Eligibility Criteria
- The Call for Youth Artists is open to all youth artists who:
- are between the ages of 13 and 20
- live on Vancouver Island, British Columbia
- have a connection to Nanaimo and/or understanding of this place
- The Call for Youth Artists is open to youth working individually or in collaboration, and encourages applications from those who experience barriers of accessibility due to gender identity/expression, racial identity, or perception of disability.
Art Guidelines
- Below are guidelines and suggestions to consider in the creation of your artwork:
- artwork will include the words ‘Youth Lounge’;
- colourful and dynamic; captures what you feel the Youth Lounge represents – what it means to you and other youth;
- inclusive;
- appropriate for families/ children;
- can be any format (digital, painting, drawing); artwork submitted in the form of an original painting/drawing/etc, will be digitized and original artwork returned to the artist.
