Deadline: 7 December 2023
UNESCO has announced a call targeting Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Peoples’ organizations worldwide to invite them to nominate representatives who will contribute to the Global Task Force, an entity responsible for bringing the International Decade of Indigenous Languages to fruition.
The International Decade of Indigenous Languages, spanning from 2022 to 2032, is dedicated to safeguarding and promoting Indigenous languages. Language serves as a vessel for people to encapsulate their worldviews, collective memory, traditional knowledge and distinctive modes of thinking, meaning and expression.
The Global Task Force is established as an international governance mechanism, to ensure equitable participation of all stakeholders in the International Decade. The task force offers advice and guidance on the preparation, planning, implementation and monitoring of progress towards achieving the objectives of the Global Action Plan for the Decade.
Members of the Task Force are elected for a three-year term, with a smaller group of members sitting each year on the Steering Committee of the Task Force. For Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Peoples’ Organizations, three members are designated for each of the seven socio-cultural regions, with one of these sitting each year on the Steering Committee. Members may be re-appointed, though priority should be given to new members.
The seven sociocultural regions, as determined by the Human Rights Council Resolution 33/25 are: Africa; Asia; Latin America and the Caribbean; the Arctic; Eastern Europe, the Russian Federation, Central Asia and Transcaucasia; North America and the Pacific.
