Call for Artists: Malta Biennale 2026

Applicants are now invited to submit applications for the Malta Biennale 2026.

This financial support applies to all individual artists participating in the 2026 edition of the Malta Biennale.

Benefits

  • Access to exhibit in a World Heritage Site.
  • The opportunity to be part of exhibit in an international programme.
  • Consultancy services for shipping, insurances and accommodation.
  • Technical assistance for the installation through the organisers’ offices.
  • Technical assessment of the exhibition by the organisers’ offices in order to verify compliance with the current Maltese security and safety regulations, and with the restrictions related to historic buildings.
  • A basic electrical and general lighting system. Internet connection.
  • Daytime surveillance of outdoor spaces during closing hours of the exhibition.
  • Night surveillance of outdoor areas.
  • Exhibition signage. Marketing and promotion – including the marketing and promotion of individual artists.
  • A general catalogue covering the entirety of the Biennale.

Funding Information

  • Maximum eligible amount per project is EUR 13,000.

Eligible Costs

  • Artistic fees (to be suggested by participant subject to the final approval of the curatorial team).
  • Hire/purchase of equipment (purchase of equipment will only be considered if deemed necessary to the project; expenses incurred prior to the application cannot be included).
  • Travel costs (for artists traveling to Malta to participate in the Malta Biennale).
  • Accommodation costs (for artists traveling to Malta to participate in the Malta Biennale).
  • Production fees.
  • Insurance.
  • Shipping/freight.
  • Contingency, not exceeding 10% of project total.

Responsibilities

  • Following the announcement of the selected applications, artists will be requested and required to attend regular meetings.
  • To deliver the proposed and accepted concept, design, production and execution of the artwork/exhibition. This is not limited to any materials, equipment, lighting nor other technical requirements to produce and deliver the project.
  • When and if necessary, the artist(s) should seek insurance and adequate transportation for all required objects and materials.
  • Travel and accommodation arrangements.
  • Successful applicants will be assigned a main contact person who must be kept in the loop with all project updates, changes, amendments, developments, etc.
  • The setting up and dismantling of the artwork/exhibition as determined by the rules and regulations of the assigned/confirmed site.
  • To participate in media interviews and any promotional activities whilst supporting the marketing, PR and communications requirements as stipulated by MUŻA.
  • Document and advertise the Biennale through social media in liaison with Malta Biennale’s communications team.
  • Attend vernissage week in Malta to promote the exhibition to the press and lead tours, as necessary.

Eligibility Criteria

  • This call is intended for both local and international artists wishing to present projects in accordance with the conceptual framework of the second edition of the Malta Biennale.
  • Artists can apply from any stage in their career (emerging or established) and from any nation.
  • Artists can apply with one or more artworks.
  • Submitted artworks and project proposals can be site- or space-specific, new artworks, or may form part of the artist’s existing portfolio.
  • Accepted artistic media include all forms of visual art: installation, painting, sculpture and three-dimensional artworks, performance, photography and video, multidisciplinary and collaborative projects are also welcome.

    • Personal contact details.
    • Title of Artwork(s)
    • The concept of the work you would like to exhibit (max 500 words).
    • Artist Bio. Sketches and/or images for each proposed artwork.
    • Artist Portfolio (PDF, max 5 pages).
    • Detailed budget breakdown.
