Call for Applications: Gender Datathon in Albania

The Gender Datathon is an opportunity for data enthusiasts across Albania to enhance their ability to effectively navigate, analyze and use gender data as a tool for positive social change, amplifying the voices advocating for a more inclusive and equitable future.

Why participate?

• Gain a better understanding of the central role that gender data play in advancing gender equality
• Build practitioner-level skills with Excel, Tableau, Canva, and FlourishChart, to explore, analyze, interpret, visualize and communicate gender data effectively
• Enhance practical skills in compelling data-driven storytelling that spotlight gender issues and women’s rights
• Network and collaborate with gender data and visualization experts

Datathon Experience

• Successful participants will engage in an intense 3-day hands-on training and mentorship to craft impactful media products that integrate gender data into messages on gender equality. The event will award the top three teams that will receive substantial mentorship to further refine their work, as well as support for professional multimedia production and eventual publication.

Support and Benefits

• The Datathon will cover training materials and meals for all participants, and transportation costs for those residing outside of Tirana.

Who can apply?

• Both individual and team applications will be accepted. In case of individual registrations, eligible applicants will be sorted and assigned to teams based on their areas of interest and skill levels. Here’s a checklist to make sure you qualify:
  • Be a national of Albania.
  • Be 18 or older at the time of registration.
  • Fit in one of the these profiles: researchers, students, members of women’s rights and civil society organization, journalists, data analysts, or dedicated gender advocates with a background in social sciences, economics, data sciences or journalism.
• All skill levels and backgrounds are welcome to participate, however they encourage the following helpful skills that can support a datathon project including:
  • Communication and journalism
  • Data visualization
  • Gender expertise
  • Research/data analysis
  • Machine learning

What are the team requirements?

• You may form your own team. Teams should be no more than 5 people. Once pre-selected, teams will have the opportunity to change the composition of their teams until the completion of the preparatory training phase. After that changes will not be possible.
• Remember, not all team members need to be data analysts. Many find it helpful to build a team consisting of a variety of backgrounds and skills.
