Deadline: 31 May 2024
The Thailand–United States Educational Foundation (Fulbright) announces competition for the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program (FLTA), a non-degree program sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State (ECA).
The FLTA Program invites applications from young Thai teachers of English to refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency and extend their knowledge of the cultures and customs of the United States while strengthening the instruction of foreign language at U.S. colleges and universities for nine months.
Fulbright FLTA participants may assist in up to twenty hours of Thai language classes a week and are required to enroll in at least two courses per semester, one of which must be in U.S. Studies. The remaining coursework must relate to their careers in English language teaching. Coursework is offered on either an audit or credit basis. Fulbright FLTA participants will also be expected to facilitate cultural events, language clubs, and language tables.
FLTA Program has a tremendous multiplier effect in the U.S. and in the home countries of the FLTA participants. U.S. universities benefit from the presence of a native foreign language speaker on their campuses. FLTA participants provide teaching assistance, by serving in various capacities. FLTA participants and U.S. students have the unique opportunity to learn about each other’s culture and to build mutual understanding between the U.S. and other countries. FLTA participants also take courses in U.S. studies and in the teaching of English as a foreign language. Upon completion of the program, they return home, teaching English at their home countries with a high proficiency in English and are able to speak with authenticity and authority about the United States, its values and its people.
Selection will be based on the candidates’ leadership skills, ability to motivate students to learn, and interest in teaching their native language and culture to U.S. students. Ideal candidates for the FLTA Program have a desire to meet people and become a part of their host community by participating in community events and campus activities. FLTA participants should also be creative and self-reliant team players, who are able to maintain excellent relationships with faculty, staff and students. FLTA Program is demand-driven and final selection is dependent on the ability to match the requests of U.S. host institutions with the language skills of the applicant pool.
