The Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts is excited to announce that applications are now open for the upcoming ‘Shades of Mind’ art exhibition, dedicated to raising awareness and promoting open dialogue about mental health.
Open to young artists aged 16-35, Shades of Mind aims to inspire creativity while fostering an inclusive environment for both emerging and established artists. They encourage participants to express their thoughts and experiences through art, helping to destigmatize mental health issues and engage the public in meaningful conversations.
In addition to the art displayed, the exhibition will feature an anonymous engagement section where all participants and visitors can share their support and experiences. This section will also provide vital resources for mental health support and information on how to get involved or seek assistance.
This unique event will take place from November 12 to 17, 2024, and is free for all attendees.
Goal

- Encourage conversations about mental health as a crucial aspect of well-being.
- Remind individuals that seeking help is a sign of strength.
- Create a judgment-free environment that fosters sharing and understanding.
- Raise public awareness about the challenges and healing journeys associated with mental health.
- Highlight the various stigmas individuals may face and promote compassion and empathy.
Themes
- Artists are invited to explore a variety of themes, including but not limited to:
- Unveiling Emotions:
- Artists are welcome to focus on conveying any type of emotions through their artwork, allowing for a rich exploration of feelings and experiences with mental health.
- To provide an understanding of emotions while creating a space to recognize and express feelings.
- Breaking the Silence / Encouraging Dialogue:
- Artists are encouraged to create works that challenge stereotypes and social norms surrounding mental health, fostering dialogue and awareness through their art.
- To create a culture of acceptance and support.
- Embracing Recovery / Journey Towards Wellness:
- Artists are invited to create artworks that depict personal stories of healing and recovery. These pieces can showcase the diverse narratives of struggle, acceptance, and the journey toward wellness and mental well-being.
- Acknowledging and embracing the idea that mental wellness is attainable, and that even though the journey comes with its challenges, it is a valuable part of the process.
- Inner Canvas:
- Artists are encouraged to explore the concept of “mindscapes” through their art, interpreting the inner workings of the mind, including thoughts, dreams, and emotions.
- By creating visual representations of their inner worlds, artists can express complexities like anxiety, joy, confusion, or clarity, making the invisible aspects of the mind more tangible and relatable.
- Unveiling Emotions:

- Encourage visitors to engage in conversations about mental health by emphasizing that it’s a vital aspect of well-being.
- Remind them that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness, and that discussing these topics openly can foster understanding and support. It’s important to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their experiences without fear of judgment.

Eligibility Criteria
- Artists are welcome to sell their artworks, but please note that they will not provide compensation for any unsold pieces.
- Art works must align with the Islamic values and laws and regulations in the Maldives. The art works should not be culturally and religiously inappropriate.
Application Requirements
- Please ensure that all submitted artwork is free from any political themes or nudity. Their aim is to create a space that is inclusive and appropriate for all audiences.
- No depiction of extreme violence, gore, or offensive languages.
- Additionally, there will be no entrance fees for artists.

- One art work per participant.
