The National Volunteer Fire Council annually honors volunteers whose achievements in the fire service and community exemplify outstanding performance.
Award Categories
- William J. Darley Lifetime Achievement Award: This award honors an individual who has been a volunteer firefighter for at least 20 years and whose remarkable achievements in the fire service and community exemplify outstanding performance.
- Chief James P. Seavey Sr. Health and Wellness Leadership Award: This award honors a volunteer firefighter, EMS provider, or rescue worker who has served as a leader in creating or promoting emergency responder health and wellness programs or initiatives in areas including, but not limited to, firefighter cancer, heart health, behavioral health, and overall health and wellness.
- NVFC Junior Firefighter of the Year Award: This award honors a junior firefighter who has gone above and beyond in their service to their fire department.
- NVFC Junior Firefighter Program of the Year Award: This award honors a junior firefighter program or Explorer Post that has demonstrated significant community impact, innovation, and creativity.
- E. James Monihan Director Award: This award honors a current or former NVFC board member whose remarkable achievements on the NVFC board exemplify outstanding performance and have gone above normal expectations. The recipient is selected by the NVFC Executive Committee.

Nomination Criteria
- William J. Darley Lifetime Achievement Award:
- Nominee has made a major contribution or has achieved significant accomplishments in the volunteer fire service on a local, state, and/or national level.
- Nominee has demonstrated superior dedication to the volunteer fire service and has served as a volunteer firefighter for at least twenty years.
- Nominee has been active in their state firefighters’ association.
- Nominee has demonstrated community impact through the fire service or other volunteer activities.
- Chief James P. Seavey Sr. Health and Wellness Leadership Award:
- Nominee has guided a local, regional, or national project or program that promotes the prevention, identification of, or support for firefighter cancer or other health and wellness area.
- Nominee has demonstrated they are true champions for health and safety issues including the area of heart-health, other physical health, firefighter physicals, and/or behavioral health initiatives.
- Nominee has presented before other groups in a manner that furthered the cause of health and wellness initiatives.
- Nominee must have obtained the majority of their fire service experience in the United States and must be a U.S. citizen.
- Nominations cannot be made posthumously.
- Current and past NVFC board members are eligible for this award.
- NVFC Junior Firefighter of the Year Award:
- Nominee has served in a junior firefighter, cadet, or explorer program for at least one full year.
- Nominee has truly gone above and beyond the normal call of duty for a junior firefighter in their commitment to the fire and emergency services.
- NVFC Junior Firefighter Program of the Year Award:
- Program has been in operation for at least one full year.
- Program has demonstrated exemplary creativity and community impact.
