The Development and Skills Enhancement (DSE) award is a postdoctoral level funding opportunity to support early to mid-career researchers who want to gain specific skills and experience to underpin the next phase of their research career.
Themes
- Health and care professionals (HCPs) developing practitioner academic career: As an HCP, you can use a DSE award to support your academic or practitioner academic career development.
- Knowledge mobilisation and implementation science: A systematic approach to knowledge mobilisation contributes to:
- study design and delivery: identified research questions are relevant to practice and everyday life
- dissemination: answers are shared with the people who need to know about your research (your knowledge users)
- implementation: findings drive changes to policy and practice
- Health data science: You can use a DSE award to develop skills in data science as applied in clinical, biomedical or population health settings. It could be used to fund MSc-level modules or full courses in HDS.
- Clinical trials: You can apply for a DSE award to gain further training within the setting of a Clinical Trials Unit (CTU). The collaboration should offer you the opportunity to experience all aspects and stages of clinical trials. It should not be limited to one study.
- Entrepreneurship and working with industry: This award can be used to support postdoctoral researchers with an interest in, and/or experience of entrepreneurship and working in industry.
Award Information
- The DSE provides funding for:
- the salary of the award holder for up to 2 years
- training and development costs up to £5,000 per year
- conference costs up to £1,000 per year
- mentorship costs up to £3,000
- You can hold a DSE award Whole Time Equivalent (WTE) for:
- 12 months
- 18 months
- 24 months

- To apply, you must:
- have completed any relevant pre-registration training (if you are applying as a clinical academic)
- have a proposed English Contracting Organisation that is an HEI, NHS body, or other provider of health and/or care services
- hold a relevant PhD or MD, or have submitted your thesis for examination at the time of application; you must have been awarded your PhD or MD by the time you start the award
- have not submitted a DSE application in the previous submission window.
