The New India Foundation is pleased to invite nominations for its Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay Book Prize to award the best non-fiction book on modern/contemporary India published in the previous year.
The Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay Book Prize builds on the New India Foundation’s mission of supporting excellence in non-fiction about modern and contemporary Indian history.
The Prize also builds on the Foundation’s mission of sponsoring high-quality research and writing on the world’s largest democracy. There are no restrictions with regards to the writer’s nationality. Works written originally in English or translated into English are eligible. No limitations apply with regards to genre – nominations could be works of history, biography, political commentary, travelogue, memoir or any other style which illuminates the making of modern India.

- Prize amount: INR 15 Lakhs
Eligibility Criteria
- The Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay NIF Book Prize is awarded to book-length studies on any aspect of modern and contemporary India, first published in the previous calendar year.
- For the 8th Annual Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay NIF Book Prize, only those titles first published between 1st January, 2024 and 31st December, 2024 shall be considered eligible.
- All nominations and entries must be originally written in English, or translated into English from an original work written in any other language.
- There is no restriction regarding the author’s nationality, or with regards to the ideology or genre of the nominated title.
- All entries will be checked for eligibility by the Jury. Any discrepancies during such eligibility checks may lead to disqualification of the nominated title.
- Any dispute about the rules, results or any other matter relating to the conduct of the Prize shall be brought to the attention of the New India Foundation, immediately. The decision of the Foundation, in this regard, will be final and binding on all parties.
Ineligibility Criteria
- Authors whose titles have been supported by the New India Foundation Fellowship are not eligible for nomination.
Nomination Criteria
- Nominations for the Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay NIF Book Prize can be made by publishers.
- Each publisher shall be permitted to nominate a maximum of six books for the Prize.
- Additionally, nominations are also permitted to be made independently by the authors or translators of eligible books themselves.
