The Christiaan Huygens Science Prize honors a young researcher who has made an innovative contribution to space sciences, mathematics or physics in a dissertation.
The Christiaan Huygens Science Prize is awarded annually to a researcher who has made an innovative contribution to science in a scientific field to be determined by the board of the Christiaan Huygens Prize Foundation.

Award Information
- The laureate receives a bronze statue by Christiaan Huygens and a cash prize of 10,000 euros.
Eligibility Criteria
- The following are eligible as nominators for the Christiaan Huygens Science Prize:
- Deans of faculties of Dutch universities
- Directors of research institutes
- Directors of research schools
- It is possible to have more than one researcher per faculty, research institute or research school to be nominated.
- Nominations must be submitted in Dutch or English and by e-mail using the form provided by the KNAW on the website provided nomination form and provided with the requested attachments. A nomination is submitted if the submitter has received a confirmation of receipt from the KNAW.
- The nomination form with the requested attachments must be submitted before the deadline set by the KNAW. If the nomination is not submitted before this date, the nomination will not be considered.
- Nominations that are not submitted according to the above procedure will not be considered. comment.
- Members of the board of the KNAW, members of the board of the Christiaan Huygens Prize foundation and members of the assessment committee may not submit nominations and cannot be nominated as candidates.
Assessment Criteria
- The jury will assess nominations for the prize and for the maximum of two honourable mentions on the basis of the following assessment criteria:
- Scientific and overall quality of the dissertation;
- Innovative contribution to the scientific field defined in accordance with the provisions of Article 1, paragraph 1:
- Social relevance of the results of the research conducted.
- The jury will draw up a report on the assessment, with the motivation for the choice of the candidate(s) for the prize and for the honourable mention(s). The assessment report will be submitted to the board of the KNAW as the jury’s recommendation.
