CFAs: Prix de Rome Prize in Architecture for Emerging Practitioners (Canada)

Inspired by the Prix de Rome in architecture, which was created in the 18th century and helped young architects train in Italy, the Prix de Rome in Architecture – Emerging Practitioners was established in Canada in 1987 in pursuit of a more outward-looking vision towards the world.

Prize Information

• Prize amount: $34,000
• The prize encourages the recipient to broaden their knowledge of contemporary architecture by visiting a selection of works of architecture abroad, and to expand their professional skills through an internship of their choosing at an architectural firm outside of Canada.

Eligible Activities

• You can apply for activities and travel abroad that will support the development of your practice. Your proposal can include multiple trips and destinations over a maximum 1-year period and it must include an internship outside of Canada that you organize. Upon returning to Canada, you must share your experience through a public conference, a publication, and/or an exhibition.

Ineligible Activities

• Activities proposed by someone under 18 years old
• Activities that are illegal according to the Criminal Code of Canada
• Artistic activities that are led by non-professionals (this does not apply to new and early career artists) activities that are carried out to satisfy the course requirements of an educational institution
• Activities that directly support the delivery of an educational program or course
• Activities that are funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) (unless applying to a component of Creating, Knowing and Sharing: The Arts and Cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples)
• Self-publishing or author-subsidized publishing of literary works (unless applying to a component of Creating, Knowing and Sharing: The Arts and Cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples)
• Activities carried out by organizations that have not paid, or do not pay, fees or royalties to artists according the standards of the arts practice or sector
• Fundraising activities
• Capital expenditures, unless explicitly eligible
• Contests and competitions (including prizes and awards), except practices in:
  • Powwow
  • Hip-hop and urban arts – such as street dance battles, poetry slams, etc.
• Any expenses incurred due to COVID-19-related measures, including quarantine expenses
• Contributions to endowment funds

Eligibility Criteria

• To apply for this prize, you must:
  • Be a Canadian citizen or have permanent resident status, as defined by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. You do not need to be living in Canada when you apply.
  • Have received a professional bachelor’s or master’s degree from a Canadian school of architecture that is certified by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board, in the 12 months before the application deadline.
  • Have a letter of recommendation from the director of the school of architecture that issued your degree.
