Applications are now open for the Dr. Hendrik Muller Prize for mid-career researcher working in the Netherlands who has made an outstanding contribution to the humanities or social sciences.
Prize Information
- The Prize consists of a cash amount of €25,000.
- The Prize will be awarded every two years from 2019 onwards.
Eligibility Criteria
- Eligible for nomination are internationally recognized mid-career scientists in the humanities and/or social sciences who:
- Be able to continue to make an important contribution to research in the humanities and/or social sciences in the coming years.
- Have obtained their PhD no more than fifteen years ago in the year of nomination and have an appointment at a university or research institute in the Netherlands. The KNAW extension scheme applies to this period applicable.
- The following are eligible as nominators for the Prize:
- Executive Boards of universities in the Netherlands (max. 2 nominations per Executive Board)
- Deans of faculties of universities in the Netherlands (max. 2 nominations per faculty dean)
- Directors of research institutes in the Netherlands in the field of the humanities and/or social sciences
- Members of the KNAW, members of the Council for the Humanities and members of the Social Sciences Council of the KNAW.
- Nominations must be submitted in Dutch or English and by e-mail using the designated nomination form with the requested attachments. A nomination is submitted when the submitter has received a confirmation of receipt from the KNAW.
- The nomination form with the requested attachments must be submitted before the deadline set by the KNAW. If the nomination is not submitted before this date, the nomination will not be considered.
Assessment Criteria
- The jury will assess nominated candidates for the Prize on the basis of the following assessment criteria:
- Internationally recognized scientific quality of the candidate.
- The candidate’s unique contribution to the humanities and/or social sciences other qualities, such as the way in which the candidate inspires young researchers or the realizing societal impact, including knowledge valorization and science communication.
- The jury will draw up a report on the assessment, with the motivation for choosing the candidate for the Prize. The assessment report will be submitted to the board of the KNAW as the jury’s nomination.
- If the nominations are not of sufficient quality, the jury may propose to the KNAW board to decide not to award the Prize in the year in question.
